Coherent interaction of radiation pulses with resonant multilevel media (review)

Leonid A Bol'shov, Vladimir V. Likhanskii

A review is given of recent theoretical investigations on coherent propagation and nonlinear interaction of multifrequency ultrashort radiation pulses in resonantly absorbing media. An analysis is made of frequency conversion by parametric interaction and stimulated Raman scattering of laser pulses in resonant three-level media. New ways of controlling the parameters of coherent pulses and the use of multifrequency pulses in the spectroscopy of multilevel media are discussed. The experimental capabilities of the investigated effects are considered.

Reduced-background gas-phase absorption spectroscopy

John N. Sweetser, Rick P. Trebino

We propose and demonstrate a new method for single-shot multiplex absorption spectroscopy that permits enhanced sensitivity in the simultaneous measurement of multiple spectral lines in rapidly changing gas-phase media, such as turbulent flames. It uses an ultrashort laser pulse that propagates through the absorbing medium, for which the relevant absorption information resides in the free-induction decay that is trailing behind the transmitted pulse. Time gating out most of the transmitted pulse, but not the free-induction decay, enhances the relative fraction of light that contains absorption information when the spectrum is measured. This procedure reduces the background associated with the input light, thus enhancing detection sensitivity.

Photon echoes in optically dense media

Sergey A. Moiseev, Mahmood Sabooni, Ravil V. Urmancheev

The authors derive analytical expressions for secondary echoes formed under the two-pulse excitation of the optically dense media developing McCall-Hahn area theorem for echo effects. They find that a series of self-reviving echo signals with a total area of 2$\ensuremath{\pi}$ or 0$\ensuremath{\pi}$ is excited and propagates deep in the media demonstrating strong non-linear nature of light-matter interaction at small changes of second pulse area. The pulse area approach paves the way for precise coherent spectroscopy, the study of different photon echoes and quantum control of light pulses in the optically dense media.
