Abstract

In this paper we consider the Liouville equation that describes the quantum nonunitary dynamics of quantum states in optical fiber. We consider a particular case of thermalization aiming to applications related to various quantum information protocols; however, the model can be generalized in various ways taking into account more features (external pump, nonlinear interactions, continuous spectra, free space propagation, etc.). In order to obtain the appropriate evolution models for states in the channel we use the $\text{su}(1,1)$ algebra formalism in the Liouville representation. The developed model is applied in cases of two different initial states as an example. The first is single- and multifrequency-mode (e.g., wavelength-division-multiplexed) weak coherent states in quantum notation as a rather simple but useful example. This particular example is of interest since weak coherent states are a commonly used tool in various fields of optics, e.g., optical communication, quantum key distribution, etc. Results for coherent states are well agreed upon with classical theories; however, in order to highlight quantum features of developed theory we also consider the case of nonclassical light, in particular, Fock states. Considered implementation of the model takes into account dichroism, retardance, thermalization, dispersion, and decoherence in the polarization domain. We derive expressions of evolved states, mean photon number, and estimate the Stokes parameters as well as the degree of polarization. Considered examples explicitly demonstrate all the features and effects of the developed approach. The described approach allows one to connect the information properties of quantum channels with its physical ones. In order to illustrate this statement we consider BB84 quantum key distribution protocol and investigate the behavior of the quantum bit error rate affected by considered physical phenomena in an optical fiber.

Quantum model of decoherence in the polarization domain for the fiber channel

Козубов Антон Владимирович, Andrei Gaidash, George P. Miroshnichenko

In this work we consider the Liouville equation; it describes the dynamics of the photon density matrix in the Schr\"odinger representation based on the Markov approximation in the channel without dispersion. The equation contains a relaxation superoperator dependent on the phenomenological parameters of the optical fiber. These parameters allow one to take into account the phenomena of birefringence and optical activity, isotropic absorption, and dichroism. We also present in our work that these parameters affect not only the polarization of the states but the length of the Stokes vector. Hence the developed technique describes the decoherence process in the polarization domain in the quantum case and allows one to analyze the dynamics of single-photon states in the quantum (depolarizing) channel more properly. We also present a visual illustration of polarization states' evolution in the polarization-coded quantum key distribution BB84 protocol as an example. We estimate quantum bit error rates' dependence on channel length. Also we examine maximal allowed channel length, dependent on various configurations of channel parameters.

The Influence of Signal Polarization on Quantum Bit Error Rate for Subcarrier Wave Quantum Key Distribution Protocol

Andrei Gaidash, Козубов Антон Владимирович, Svetlana Medvedeva +1 more

In this paper, we consider the influence of a divergence of polarization of a quantum signal transmitted through an optical fiber channel on the quantum bit error rate of the subcarrier wave quantum key distribution protocol. Firstly, we investigate the dependence of the optical power of the signal on the modulation indices' difference after the second phase modulation of the signal. Then we consider the Liouville equation with regard to relaxation in order to develop expressions of the dynamics of the Stokes parameters. As a result, we propose a model that describes quantum bit error rate for the subcarrier wave quantum key distribution depending on the characteristics of the optical fiber. Finally, we propose several methods for minimizing quantum bit error rate.

Optimization of optical fiber parameters to reduce errors of quantum key distribution using entangled polarization states of biphotons

George P. Miroshnichenko, A. A. Sotnikova

A phenomenological Hamiltonian of photons in single-mode stochastic fiber depending on the vector of random parameters is proposed. The time dynamics of single-photon density matrix in the basis of states with orthogonal polarizations is considered. The fiber-parameter-averaged quantum bit error rate (QBER) in a sifted quantum key distributed over the BB84 protocol using entangled polarization states of biphotons is found. It is shown that QBER can be significantly reduced even at large dispersions of random fiber parameters. To this end, identically fabricated fibers must be used for quantum channels A and B. The choice of pairs of fiber segments must be correlated, with a correlation coefficient close to unity. This approach is based on a remarkable property of the singlet biphoton state, which is “free of collective decoherence.” A correlated choice of fiber segments for channels A and B reduces significantly QBER, making its value below critical (i.e., equal to 0.11, a level below which a distributed key is accepted for cryptographic purposes).

Abstract We consider the time evolution of the mean values of the quadrature operators’ observables and the dynamics of the mean photon number variance for an arbitrary quantum state in a single mode transmitted through an optical fiber channel. Utilizing the density matrix formalism and the quantum optics theory we derive expressions for the dynamics of mentioned field observables for such prominent quantum states as squeezed vacuum state, squeezed coherent state and superposition of coherent states.

SU(1,1) Lie algebraic approach to linear dissipative processes in quantum optics

Masashi Ban

An SU(1,1) Lie algebraic formulation is presented for investigating the linear dissipative processes in quantum optical systems. The Liouville space formulation, thermo field dynamics, and the disentanglement theorem of SU(1,1) Lie algebra play essential roles in this formulation. In the Liouville space, the time-evolution equation for the state vector of a system is solved algebraically by using the decomposition formulas of SU(1,1) Lie algebra and the thermal state condition of thermo field dynamics. The presented formulation is used for investigating a dissipative nonlinear oscillator, the quantum mechanical model of phase modulation, and the photon echo in the localized electron–phonon system. This algebraic formulation gives a systematic treatment for investigating the phenomena in quantum optical systems.

Theoretical analysis of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution systems integrated into fiber-optic communication lines using dense wavelength division multiplexing

Irina O. Vorontsova, R. Goncharov, Angelina Tarabrina +5 more

Subject of study. The effect of noise resulting from spontaneous Raman scattering, four-wave mixing, and linear channel crosstalk on the performance of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution systems with symmetric and asymmetric realizations is studied. Mathematical models of the measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution system and considered channel noise sources are presented. The secure key generation rate was calculated in all cases for assessment and subsequent analysis of the system performance. These results enabled the identification and presentation of the operation features of the measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution system upon its integration into existing fiber-optic communication networks using dense wavelength division multiplexing. Aim of the work. The performance of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution systems integrated into fiber-optic communication lines using dense wavelength division multiplexing by means of numerical simulation is investigated. Method. An approach based on analysis of the Raman scattering cross section plot and allocation of the information channels of frequencies corresponding to areas located sideways to the pump wavelength was used to determine the optimal configurations of the allocation of quantum and information channels. A single-photon scheme in one symmetric and two asymmetric system realizations was considered for numerical simulations of the quantum key distribution system with an untrusted node. A security analysis was performed according to the Devetak–Winter bound that enables estimating the secure key generation rate in an asymptotic mode (for symmetric infinite sequences) in the presence of collective attacks in the quantum channel. Main results. It was confirmed that the implementation of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution systems with equal paths of the sender and the receiver (i.e., symmetric) is optimal. The result deteriorated with an increase in the asymmetry parameter. If the quantum channel is within the C-band, the advantage of the symmetric realization was minimal, and it was almost indiscernible when the number of information channels was increased to 40. However, if the quantum channel was at the wavelength of 1310 nm (O band), the difference was significant. Moreover, allocation of the wavelength of 1310 nm to the quantum channel enables the longest distance of operation, and it weakly depends on the number of channels. Practical significance. For practical implementation of quantum key distribution systems, their integration into existing telecommunication infrastructure is of particular interest. This can be achieved through the simultaneous propagation of quantum and information channels in the fiber-optic communication lines by means of multiplexing, and in particular, dense wavelength division multiplexing. However, the power levels characteristic for quantum signals are significantly lower than those for information signals. Therefore, if the information and quantum channels propagate in the same fiber, the noise from the information channels significantly reduces the performance of the quantum key distribution systems. For this reason, the physical and mathematical description, analysis, and numerical simulation of the noise and its interaction with different quantum key distribution systems aimed at identifying the most effective integration method are crucial for the integration of quantum key distribution systems into existing telecommunication networks.
