Apparent non-conservation of momentum of light due to strongly coupled nonlinear dynamics in a multimode optical fiber

Hamed Pourbeyram, Arash Mafi

The intimate interaction between phase-matched parametric amplification and strong nonlinear mode coupling in a multimode optical fiber results in a saturable spatial mode conversion that appears to violate the conservation of momentum. We investigate, by theory and experiment, this new regime of strong nonlinear interaction in multimode optical fibers and show that the appearance of the non-conservation of linear momentum is merely a clever sleight of hand by nature. This novel saturable mode conversion can potentially be used in a variety of applications including the generation of exotic quantum states of light.

Incoherent effects in the optical up-conversion process

W. J. Mielniczuk, Jacek Chrostowski

The theoretical treatment of the optical frequency up-conversion process with stochastic pumping is presented. This process consists of exchange of photons between two modes of different frequencies. It is assumed that the two modes are coupled by a short memory stochastic function. Statistically averaged occupation numbers of both modes were calculated exactly by means of the theory of multiplicative stochastic processes. The obtained nonperturbative solution sums secular terms and is valid for arbitrary times. The oscillatory-damped nature of the exchange of energy between two modes and the role of partial incoherence of the pump is discussed. It is shown that stochastic coupling causes the equipartition of energy between two modes for sufficiently long times. Analogies between an up-converter and a two-level atom driven by a single mode electromagnetic field are indicated. Optical Bloch equations for an up-conversion process are derived.

A general solution for the dynamics of a generalized non-degenerate optical parametric down-conversion interaction by virtue of the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant theory

Jiangfan Li, Zongfu Jiang, Fuliang Xiao +1 more

The dynamics of a generalized non-degenerate optical parametric down-conversion interaction whose Hamiltonian includes an arbitrary time-dependent driving part and a two-mode coupled part is studied by adopting the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant theory. The closed formulae for the evolution of the quantum states and the evolution operators of the system are obtained. It is shown that various generalized squeezed states arise naturally in the process, and the two-mode squeezed effect is independent of the driving part. An explicitly analytical solution of the Schrödinger equation is further derived as the classical generalized force acting on each mode and the coupling of the two modes both have harmonic time dependences. This solution is found to be in agreement with previous research in special cases.
