Deterministic control of photonic de Broglie waves using coherence optics

Abstract

Photonic de Broglie waves offer a unique property of quantum mechanics satisfying the complementarity between the particle and wave natures of light, where the photonic de Broglie wavelength is inversely proportional to the number of entangled photons acting on a beam splitter. Very recently, the nonclassical feature of photon bunching has been newly interpreted using the pure wave nature of coherence optics [Sci. Rep. 10, 7,309 (2020)], paving the road to unconditionally secured classical key distribution [Sci. Rep. 10, 11,687 (2020)]. Here, deterministic photonic de Broglie waves are presented in a coherence regime to uncover new insights in both fundamental quantum physics and potential applications of coherence-quantum metrology.

Experimental Demonstrations of Coherence de Broglie Waves Using Sub-Poisson Distributed Coherent Photon Pairs

S. Kim, Byoung Seung HAM

Abstract Recently, a new interpretation of quantum mechanics has been developed for the wave nature of a photon, where determinacy in quantum correlations becomes an inherent property without the violation of quantum mechanics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a direct proof of the wave natures of quantum correlation for the so-called coherence de Broglie waves (CBWs) using sub-Poisson distributed coherent photon pairs obtained from an attenuated laser. The observed experimental data coincides with the analytic solutions and the numerical calculations. Thus, the CBWs pave a road toward deterministic and macroscopic quantum technologies for such as quantum metrology, quantum sensing, and even quantum communications, that are otherwise heavily limited due to the microscopic non-determinacy of the particle nature-based quantum mechanics.

Observations of coherence de Broglie waves

Byoung Seung HAM

Photonic de Broglie waves (PBWs) via two-mode entangled photon pair interactions on a beam splitter show a pure quantum feature which cannot be obtained by classical means1-4. Although PBWs have been intensively studied for quantum metrology5-13 and quantum sensing14-25 over the last several decades, their implementation has been limited due to difficulties of high-order NOON state generation4. Recently a coherence version of PBWs, the so-called coherence de Broglie waves (CBWs), has been proposed in a pure classical regime of an asymmetrically coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)26. Unlike PBWs, the quantumness of CBWs originates from the cascaded quantum superposition of the coupled MZI. Here, the first CBWs observation is presented in a pure classical regime and discussed for its potential applications in coherence quantum metrology to overcome conventional PBWs limited by higher-order entangled photons. To understand the quantum superposition-based nonclassical features in CBWs, various violation tests are also performed, where asymmetrical phase coupling is the key parameter for CBWs.

Wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics: a coherence approach

Byoung Seung HAM

The wave-particle duality of a photon is the bedrock of quantum optics, where both natures are mutually exclusive. Contrary to the conventional understanding of quantum features such as photon bunching on a beam splitter and Bell inequality violation based on the particle nature of photons, a new interpretation is presented for the fundamental understanding of the same quantum features using the wave nature of photons. For this, phase quantization of an optical system interacting with photons is investigated and applied it to a particular quantum phenomenon to fully understand the fundamental concept of indistinguishability between two photons in the quantum feature. This talk opens the door to randomness-based quantum determinacy.

Deterministic quantum correlation between coherently paired photons acting on a beam splitter

Byoung Seung HAM

Quantum technologies based on the particle nature of a photon has been progressed over the last several decades, where the fundamental quantum features of entanglement have been tested by Hong-Ou-Mandel-type anticorrelation and Bell-type nonlocal correlation. Recently, mutually exclusive quantum features based on the wave nature of a photon have been investigated to understand the fundamental physics of mysterious quantum correlation, resulting in deterministic and macroscopic quantum technologies. Here, we study the quantum natures of paired photons acting on a beam splitter, where mutual coherence plays a major role. Unlike current common understanding on anticorrelation, bipartite entanglement between paired photons does not have to be probabilistic or post-selected, but can be deterministic and even macroscopic via phase basis manipulation without violating quantum mechanics.

Photonic de Broglie Waves

Joseph M. Jacobson, Gunnar G. Bjork, Isaac L. Chuang +1 more

In quantum optics an ensemble of photons is treated as a Bose condensate which has a de Broglie wavelength given by ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{0}/N$ where ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{0}$ and $N$ are the wavelength and average number of constituent photons, respectively. We describe an interferometer which is capable of measuring this de Broglie wavelength. We show specifically that a coherent state input has a de Broglie coherence length proportional to $1/\sqrt{N}$. Finally we show that the interferometer is Heisenberg limited in sensitivity ( $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{\mathrm{min}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1/N$) and thus forms a new class of interferometers operating at the fundamental quantum limit.

Coherently controlled quantum features in a coupled interferometric scheme

Byoung Seung HAM

Over the last several decades, entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion processes in both second-order and third-order nonlinear optical materials have been intensively studied for various quantum features such as Bell inequality violation and anticorrelation. In an interferometric scheme, anticorrelation results from photon bunching based on randomness when entangled photon pairs coincidently impinge on a beam splitter. Compared with post-measurement-based probabilistic confirmation, a coherence version has been recently proposed using the wave nature of photons. Here, the origin of quantum features in a coupled interferometric scheme is investigated using pure coherence optics. In addition, a deterministic method of entangled photon-pair generation is proposed for on-demand coherence control of quantum processing.
