Photoionization rates of Cs Rydberg atoms in a 1064-nm far-off-resonance trap

J. Tallant, Donald W. Booth, James P. Shaffer

Experimental measurements of photoionization rates of ${\mathit{nD}}_{5/2}$ Rydberg states of Cs ($50\ensuremath{\leqslant}n\ensuremath{\leqslant}75$) in a 1064-nm far off-resonance dipole trap are presented. The photoionization rates are obtained by measuring the lifetimes of Rydberg atoms produced inside of a 1064-nm far off-resonance trap and comparing the lifetimes to corresponding control experiments in a magneto-optical trap. Experimental results for the control experiments agree with recent theoretical predictions for Rydberg state lifetimes and measured photoionization rates are in agreement with transition rates calculated from a model potential.

Resonant photoionization in a system of two nonidentical atoms

Alexander B Voitkiv, Bennaceur Najjari

We consider one-photon ionization in a system consisting of two different atoms, $A$ and $B$, which are well separated in space. In such a case, photoionization of the atom with a lower ionization potential can be very strongly influenced, via two-center electron-electron correlations, by resonant electron dipole transitions induced in the other atom. We present a detailed consideration of this resonant photoionization process and discuss a number of effects that are inherent to it.
