Noncyclic geometric phase, coherent states, and the time-dependent variational principle: Application to coupled electron-nuclear dynamics

Erik Sjöqvist, Magnus Hedström

Kinematical and dynamical aspects of the noncyclic geometric phase for coherent states are analyzed. It is shown for Glauber and SU(2) coherent states that the geometric phase obeys a geodesic closure rule associated with the coset space of the respective Lie group. In the former case the geodesic is a straight line in phase space, while in the latter the geodesic is a great circle on the Bloch sphere $({\mathcal{S}}^{2}).$ An alternative expression for the geometric phase is derived from the time-dependent variational principle by making a specific choice of gauge. The noncyclic geometric phase is numerically calculated in a time-dependent variational treatment of the $E\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$ Jahn-Teller model first introduced by Longuet-Higgins and co-workers. The electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom are parametrized by SU(2) and Glauber coherent states respectively. In particular, the adiabatic limit is studied and shown to yield the anticipated Berry geometric phase.

Quantum Nonadiabatic Cloning of Entangled Coherent States

Artur F. Izmaylov, Loïc Joubert-Doriol

We propose a systematic approach to the basis set extension for nonadiabatic dynamics of entangled combination of nuclear coherent states (CSs) evolving according to the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP). The TDVP provides a rigorous framework for fully quantum nonadiabatic dynamics of closed systems; however, the quality of results strongly depends on available basis functions. Starting with a single nuclear CS replicated vertically on all electronic states, our approach clones this function when replicas of the CS on different electronic states experience increasingly different forces. Created clones move away from each other (decohere), extending the basis set. To determine a moment for cloning, we introduce generalized forces based on derivatives that maximally contribute to a variation of the total quantum action and thus account for entanglement of all basis functions.

Coherent state approach to electron nuclear dynamics with an antisymmetrized geminal power state

Brian Weiner, Erik Deumens, Yngve Öhrn

A formulation of the complete dynamics of electrons and nuclei is presented. The dynamical equations are derived using the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP). The approximate electronic state vectors are antisymmetrized geminal power (AGP) states parameterized as projected coherent states, while the nuclei are treated as classical point particles. This leads to a formulation of time-dependent AGP theory that generalizes time-dependent Hartree–Fock (TDHF) theory and explicitly includes the dynamics of the nuclei. The linear approximation to the evolution equations (the classical harmonic approximation) which corresponds to a generalized random phase approximation (RPA) based on an AGP electronic reference state and which explicitly includes the dynamics of the nuclei, is studied and presented in this paper. The equations are formulated in terms of the primitive nonorthogonal electronic atomic basis thus avoiding any transformation to orthonormal molecular orbitals during the evolution.

Thawed Gaussian Ehrenfest dynamics

Jiří J. L. Vaníček

Ehrenfest dynamics is a widely used mixed quantum--classical approach for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, whereas thawed Gaussian wavepacket dynamics provides an efficient semiclassical description of adiabatic nuclear quantum dynamics. Here we describe thawed Gaussian Ehrenfest dynamics (TGED), which unifies and generalizes these two methods to capture both electronic nonadiabaticity and nuclear quantum effects within a single framework. The fully variational formulation of TGED is derived by applying the time-dependent variational principle to a Hartree product of electronic and Gaussian nuclear wavepackets. Replacing the effective locally quadratic molecular potential obtained from this variational treatment by alternative effective locally quadratic potentials yields an infinite family of TGED methods, of which we present several members. We analyze the limiting cases of the general formalism and show, in particular, that it reduces to conventional Ehrenfest dynamics in the classical limit for the nuclei and to thawed Gaussian wavepacket dynamics in the absence of electronic coupling. Finally, we present explicit geometric integrators for the entire family of methods and identify the conditions under which the different approximations become exact.
