Device-Independent Quantum Information Processing

Antonio Acín

Quantum Information Theory (QIT) studies how quantum effects can be used to design novel forms of information processing and transmission. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is the most mature quantum information application. We first introduce QIT and discuss the main concepts in QKD and the assumptions required for its security, and compare them with the classical alternatives. We then present the novel paradigm of Device-Independent Quantum Information Processing (DIQIP), in which the goal is to design information protocols whose performance does not depend on the devices used in their realization. We conclude by discussing two of the applications in this scenario: device-independent QKD and randomness generation.

An introduction to quantum information processing: applications and realizations

Timothy P. Spiller, William J. Munro, S. D. Barrett +1 more

The ideas behind Quantum Information Processing (QIP) began to appear about twenty years ago and theoretical developments have been appearing ever since. Over the last decade quantum experiments have begun to realize QIP and point the way towards the routes for future quantum information technology. This review is a simple introduction to QIP for non-experts. It discusses the basic ideas of and the underpinning quantum theory needed to understand them, as well as various applications and algorithms, and some of the main candidate routes for realizing QIP.

Introduction to Quantum Information Processing

Emanuel H. Knill, Raymond Laflamme, Howard Barnum +7 more

As a result of the capabilities of quantum information, the science of quantum information processing is now a prospering, interdisciplinary field focused on better understanding the possibilities and limitations of the underlying theory, on developing new applications of quantum information and on physically realizing controllable quantum devices. The purpose of this primer is to provide an elementary introduction to quantum information processing, and then to briefly explain how we hope to exploit the advantages of quantum information. These two sections can be read independently. For reference, we have included a glossary of the main terms of quantum information.
