Atom chips with two-dimensional electron gases: Theory of near-surface trapping and ultracold-atom microscopy of quantum electronic systems

We show that current in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can trap ultracold atoms $<$1 $\ensuremath{\mu}$m away with orders of magnitude less spatial noise than a metal trapping wire. This enables the creation of hybrid systems, which integrate ultracold atoms with quantum electronic devices to give extreme sensitivity and control: For example, activating a single quantized conductance channel in the 2DEG can split a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) for atom interferometry. In turn, the BEC offers unique structural and functional imaging of quantum devices and transport in heterostructures and graphene.

New light on cavity QED with ultracold atoms

Carsten Henke, Brian Power, Fernando Sols

We give an overview on quantum electrodynamics (QED) with atoms located near a planar surface. Starting from basic concepts like electric and magnetic dipole transitions and electromagnetic near fields, we explain some properties of magnetic fields that are relevant for ultracold atoms in hybrid electromagnetic-surface traps. In particular, we discuss next order corrections to the atom-surface interaction potential due to the magnetic moment.

Optimized magneto-optical trap for experiments with ultracold atoms near surfaces

Stephan Wildermuth, P. Krüger, C. Becker +5 more

We present an integrated wire-based magneto-optical trap for the simplified trapping and cooling of large numbers of neutral atoms near material surfaces. With a modified $\mathrm{U}$-shaped current-carrying $\text{Cu}$ structure we collect more than $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a mirror magneto-optical trap without using quadrupole coils. These atoms are subsequently loaded to a $\mathrm{Z}$-wire trap where they are evaporatively cooled to a Bose-Einstein condensate close to the surface.
