Realization of one-dimensional anyons with arbitrary statistical phase

Joyce Kwan, Perrin C. Segura, Y. Li +5 more

Low-dimensional quantum systems can host anyons, particles with exchange statistics that are neither bosonic nor fermionic. However, the physics of anyons in one dimension remains largely unexplored. In this work, we realize Abelian anyons in one dimension with arbitrary exchange statistics using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, where we engineer the statistical phase through a density-dependent Peierls phase. We explore the dynamical behavior of two anyons undergoing quantum walks and observe the anyonic Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect as well as the formation of bound states without on-site interactions. Once interactions are introduced, we observe spatially asymmetric transport in contrast to the symmetric dynamics of bosons and fermions. Our work forms the foundation for exploring the many-body behavior of one-dimensional anyons.

Many-body constraints and nonthermal behavior in one-dimensional open systems with Haldane exclusion statistics

Bo Xiong, F. J. Burnell

We study the impact of the interlevel energy constraints imposed by Haldane exclusion statistics on energy relaxation processes in one-dimensional systems coupled to a bosonic bath. By formulating a second-quantized description of the relevant Fock space, we identify certain universal features of this relaxation dynamics, and show that it is generically slower than that of spinless fermions. Our study focuses on the Calogero-Sutherland model, which realizes Haldane Exclusion statistics exactly in one dimension; however, our results apply to any system that has the associated pattern of interlevel occupancy constraints in Fock space.

Exact Anomalous Current Fluctuations in Quantum Many-Body Dynamics

Kazuya Fujimoto, Taiki Ishiyama, Taiga Kurose +2 more

Fluctuations of integrated currents have attracted considerable interest over the past decades in the context of statistical mechanics. Recently, anomalous current fluctuations, characterized by the M-Wright function, were obtained exactly in a classical automaton [$Ž$. Krajnik et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 160601 (2022)], and previous studies have shown that the anomalous behavior can arise in a variety of classical systems. Despite the rapidly growing interest in such anomalous behaviors, which capture a universal aspect of one-dimensional many-body transport, the exact derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body systems has remained elusive. In this Letter, we present the first exact microscopic derivation of the M-Wright function in quantum many-body dynamics by analyzing the integrated spin current in a one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model with infinitely strong repulsive interactions. Our results lay the groundwork for exploring anomalous integrated currents in a broad class of quantum many-body systems.
