Electromagnetic shielding in quantum metrology

Yao Jin, Hongwei Yu

The dynamics of the quantum Fisher information of the parameters of the initial atomic state and atomic transition frequency is studied, in the framework of open quantum systems, for a static polarizable two-level atom coupled in the multipolar scheme to a bath of fluctuating vacuum electromagnetic fields without and with the presence of a reflecting boundary. Our results show that in the case without a boundary, the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations always cause the quantum Fisher information of the initial parameters and thus the precision limit of parameter estimation to decrease. Remarkably, however, with the presence of a boundary, the quantum Fisher information becomes position and atomic polarization dependent and, as a result, it may be enhanced as compared to that in the case without a boundary and may even be shielded from the influence of the vacuum fluctuations in certain circumstances as if it were a closed system.

Quantum Fisher information in the cosmic string spacetime

Zhiming Huang, Haozhen Situ, Zhimin He

Abstract We analyze the quantum Fisher information (QFI) for a particle detector coupled to a thermal electromagnetic field in the cosmic string spacetime. It is found that vacuum fluctuation, temperature, detector polarization and nontrivial spacetime topology affect the QFI. Vacuum fluctuation and temperature degrade QFI. When deficit angle parameter ν = 1 and detector is far away from the string, the results in free Minkowski spacetime are restored. When detector is close to the string, QFI can be effectively enhanced; specially when detector lies in the string and is not polarized along axial direction, the detector seems like a closed system, and QFI completely is not affected by the thermal electromagnetic fluctuation. For nonzero detector–string distance, QFI appears oscillatory behaviors as detector–string distance varies. In addition, this detector eventually evolves to a thermal state, which is not related to the initial state and other various parameters, which implies QFI cannot persist in for long evolution time in the cosmic string spacetime. In principle, the detector polarization, detector–string distance, temperature and deficit angle parameter provide us with more parameters to steer the QFI behaviors, which might be helpful to enhance the precision of sensing the characters of cosmic string spacetime.

Quantum Fisher information in massless scalar field with a boundary

Zhiming Huang

We explore the changes of Quantum Fisher information (QFI) for an uniformly accelerating atom coupling to fluctuating massless scalar field with a perfectly reflecting boundary. We first deduce the master equation that the system obeys. For the unbounded case, the vacuum fluctuation and Unruh thermal bath can rapidly degrade the QFI. However, with a boundary, the degradation, preservation, fluctuation and enhancement of QFI are dependent on the evolution time, boundary and acceleration. In addition, the existing boundary can effectively shield QFI from the influence of the vacuum fluctuation and Unruh thermal effect. Especially, the QFI seems to be unaffected by the vacuum fluctuation and acceleration when the atom is very close to the boundary. The efficient control of the boundary and acceleration can provide the feasible scheme of improving the parameter estimation precision.
