Multimode Kapitza-Dirac Interferometry with Trapped Cold Atoms

Weidong Li, Tianchen He, Augusto Smerzi

We design a multimode interferometer with cold atoms confined in a harmonic trap. A first Kapitza-Dirac pulse creates several spatially addressable modes which are coherently recombined by the harmonic potential and mixed again by a second Kapitza-Dirac pulse. A phase shift among the mode is estimated by fitting the density profile or by measuring the number of atoms in each output mode. The expected sensitivity is rigorously calculated with the Fisher information and the Cramér-Rao lower bound. For the measurement of the gravitational acceleration g we predict, with typical parameters of a compact setup, a temperature independent sensitivity which can exceed, by several orders of magnitude, the sensitivity of current atomic interferometers.

Decrease in the visibility of the interference fringes in a cold-atom accelerometer

James Stickney, Alex A. Zozulya

We analyze operation of a cold-atom accelerometer, an interferometric device which measures linear accelerations. We develop an analytic model that predicts a decrease in the visibility of the interference fringes and also their shift caused by the acceleration of the device. This effect places an upper limit on the maximum value of acceleration that can be measured for given parameters of the confining potential and the measurement cycle time.

Gravity-Sensitive Quantum Dynamics in Cold Atoms

Zhaoyuan Ma, M. B. d’Arcy, S. A. Gardiner

We subject a falling cloud of cold cesium atoms to periodic kicks from a sinusoidal potential created by a vertical standing wave of laser light. By controllably accelerating the potential, we show quantum accelerator mode dynamics to be highly sensitive to the effective gravitational acceleration when close to specific, resonant values. This quantum sensitivity to a control parameter is reminiscent of that associated with classical chaos and promises techniques for precision measurement.
