Abstract

We report an effective method for enhancing the photoassociation of ultracold atoms using a non-resonant magnetic field, which enables the manipulation of the coupling between the wavefunctions of the colliding atomic pairs and the excited molecules. A series of photoassociation spectra are measured for different magnetic fields. We show that the photoassociation rate is significantly dependent on the non-resonant magnetic field. A qualitatively theoretical explanation is provided, and shows a good agreement with the experimental result.

Control of laser-induced frequency shift in ultracold cesium molecules by an external magnetic field

Yuqing Li, Guosheng Feng, Wenliang Liu +4 more

We investigate an effective control of the laser-induced frequency shift of ultracold cesium molecules formed by photoassociation (PA) in a magnetically levitated crossed dipole trap via an external magnetic field. A series of molecular PA spectra have been measured with increasing the PA laser intensity at different bias fields. We find that the slope of laser-induced frequency shift is strongly dependent on the external magnetic field: the slope can be increased up to a maximum of ∼6 times compared with a slope without an external magnetic field. A qualitatively theoretical explanation has been offered by considering the external magnetic field that can be used to manipulate the interaction between ultracold atoms.

Manipulation of photoassociation of ultracold Cs atoms with tunable scattering length by external magnetic fields

Guosheng Feng, Yuqing Li, Xiaofeng Wang +5 more

We demonstrate that for ultracold, optically trapped Cs atoms the photoassociation (PA) can be manipulated by using external uniform magnetic fields due to the alteration of the scattering wavefunction in the region of the free-bound optical transition. We present PA-induced atom loss measurements with the same intensity for PA laser but different external magnetic fields, and analyze main contributions of the PA to the variation of the number of atoms in the trap. The PA rate exhibits a strong dependence on the changing uniform magnetic field. The experimental data are simulated within the model of a single-channel one-well rectangular potential, whose depth is adjusted so as to assure the predicted variation of the scattering length with the magnetic field. The computational and experimental results are in a reasonable agreement to each other. The same model is used to illustrate some general properties of the two-body quantum system in the near-threshold state.

Controlling the formation of cold molecules via a Feshbach resonance

B. Laburthe-Tolra, Nathalie Hoang, B. T'Jampens +5 more

Ultracold molecules are formed via photoassociation in a polarized sample of cold cesium atoms. The rate of molecule formation is controlled by tuning a magnetic field. The radial dependence of the colliding wave function is probed by the photoassociation spectroscopy technique. We have in this way observed the drastic influence of the magnetic field in a broad Feshbach resonance for f = 3, m = 3 colliding atoms and for magnetic fields up to 30 G.

The effects of Feshbach resonance on spectral shifts in photoassociation of Cs atoms

Yuqing Li, Xiaofeng Wang, Jizhou Wu +7 more

We study the effects of magnetic Feshbach resonance on the shifts in photoassociation (PA) spectra of ultracold Cs atoms. A series of atom loss spectra show a linear variation of the frequency shift with the PA laser intensity at different magnetic fields near the d-wave Feshbach resonance of optically trapped Cs atoms. The magnetic field-dependence of the slope of the shift on the PA laser intensity exhibits a dispersive change near the Feshbach resonance. The theoretical formula derived from a model based on Fano resonance fits well with the experimental data. Using a model rectangular potential with tunable well depth and applying the Franck-Condon principle, we obtain numerical results, which are found to be largely in disagreement with the experimental findings.

Photoassociation as a probe of Feshbach resonances in cold-atom scattering

Frank A. van Abeelen, Daniel J. Heinzen, BOUDEWIJN J. VERHAAR

We investigate theoretically the influence of magnetically tunable Feshbach collision resonances on the photoassociation spectra of ultracold atoms. As an example we consider recently predicted resonances for ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. For excitation to the ${}^{85}{\mathrm{Rb}}_{2}{\mathrm{ }0}_{g}^{\ensuremath{-}}{(S}_{1/2}{+P}_{1/2})$ electronic state, we predict that the photoassociation rate is resonantly enhanced by at least two orders of magnitude. We find that photoassociation could serve as a useful probe with which to study Feshbach resonances in ultracold collisions. In turn, these resonances should be very important to Bose-condensed gases, and more generally, to coherent atom optics.

The Photoassociation Reaction of Ultracold Atoms

Yu Wang, Qingtian Meng

Photoassociation reaction is the process in which two colliding atoms (or the colliding atom-molecule system) absorb a photon to form an excited molecule. Since the researches based on the ultracold atomic and molecular systems have attracted great attention both from theorists and experimentalists, the ultracold photoassociation reaction is becoming an ascendant research field. In this paper, we review briefly the investigation history of the photoassociation reaction for ultracold atoms, especially the basic theory of collision and the photoassociation in different light fields, and the research on the external-field manipulation of ultracold atoms collisions is also prospected.
