Excitation of the Sr and Sr+ resonance lines by electron impact on Sr atoms

Abstract

The relative optical excitation functions and polarizations of the Sr resonance line (4607 \AA{}) and of the ${\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ resonance lines (4078 and 4216 \AA{}) have been measured, using crossed electron and strontium-atom beams, for electron energies from the excitation thresholds to 1497 eV. The electron-beam energy resolution was \ensuremath{\sim} 0.22 eV for energies below 13 eV, and the atom beam was optically thin. The excitation functions of the ionic lines were measured relative to that of the atomic resonance line at fixed energies near the maxima of the excitation functions. Using spontaneous-emission branching ratios, this yields the ratios of total excitation cross sections for the atomic and ionic resonance levels (including cascades). The Sr $5^{1}P$ excitation function has been normalized to Born theory taking account of cascade at 1497 eV, where the energy dependence of the excitation function has converged to the theoretical behavior. The resulting normalized cross sections have been compared with available theoretical calculations and other measurements. The 4607-\AA{} polarization function is consistent with the theoretical threshold limit within experimental uncertainity.

Electron excitation of the resonance lines of the alkali-metal atoms

S. T. Chen, Alan C. Gallagher

We have measured the relative optical-excitation functions and polarizations of the K, Rb, and Cs resonance lines, using crossed electron and atom beams, for electron energies from threshold to 1500 eV. The electron energy resolution was \ensuremath{\sim}0.25 eV for energies below 13 eV, and the atom beam was optically thin. The atomic resonance-level (${n}^{2}P$) excitation functions have been normalized to the Born theory in the high-energy limit. Comparisons are made with other measurements and calculations. The polarizations and total cross sections for H, Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs are also compared with each other in reduced units to investigate systematic behavior.

Excitation of spin-polarized sodium and potassium atoms by electron impact

Muhammad Abdul-Hakim Bukhari, H -J Beyert, M. A. Chaudhry +3 more

A beam of unpolarized electrons is crossed at right angles with a beam of partially polarized sodium or potassium atoms (degree of polarization P A approximately=21%) and resonance lines from the excited 2 P 3/2, 1/2 states are observed in a direction perpendicular to both the atom and electron beams for electron energies from threshold to 200 eV. The polarization of the emitted photons is measured in the form of the Stokes parameters P 1 , P 2 and P 3 . The present measurements for sodium atoms are in better agreement with the theoretical values than the previously published experimental results. No other experimental or theoretical results are available for potassium atoms.

Near-threshold excitation of the λ132.2 nm resonance line of the Tl+ ion by electron impact

Г. М. Гомонай, V Roman, Л. О. Бандуріна +3 more

Background : Among all processes of collision of electrons with atomic particles the study of the interaction between electrons and ions is extremely important and necessary for a better understanding of the basic collisional processes in plasma. In the processes of excitation, recombination, and ionization of ions by electron impact autoionization states play an important role. Their radiation decay makes an additional contribution to the photo-recombination process and leads to dielectronic recombination of an ion. Such contribution is most significant in the case of heavy many-electron ions such as the Tl + ion. Excitation of the Tl + ion by an electron impact at electron-ion collisions is practically not investigated up to date. Methods: Experiments were performed using a spectroscopic method in conditions of electron and ion beams intersecting at an angle of 90°. The ribbon electron beam (cross section 1×8 mm 2 , energy E e = 6–14 eV, current I e = (2–10)×10 –5 A) was formed by a low-energy three-electrode electron gun. The ion beam (cross section 2.5×2.5 mm 2 , energy E i = 800 eV, current I i = (5–7)×10 –7 A) was obtained using a low-voltage arc discharge source. The radiation due to decay of the ion states excited during the collisions was detected perpendicular to the plane of the beams intersection. Spectral separation of the radiation in a vacuum ultraviolet region was carried out by 70° vacuum monochromator based on the Seya-Namioka scheme. Results: Thorough measurements of the near-threshold region of the energy dependence of the effective cross section of the electron excitation of the resonance l 132.2 nm line (6 s 6 p 1 P o 1 → 6 s 2 1 S 0 ) of the Tl + ion in the 6–14 eV energy range revealed resonant features both after and before the excitation threshold of the line. The widths of the before-threshold peculiarities is defined by the dispersion of the excited electrons energy. This is indicative of their resonant nature, i.e., they are due to the formation and decay of the atoionization states (AIS) of the Tl atom. Most likely, they are related to the formation and decay of the AIS of the 6 s 6 pnp configuration ( n  ≥ 7) to the excited levels of the Tl atom. The nature of the after-threshold structure indicates that it is also the result of resonance processes and is due to the formation and decay of the AIS, most likely of the 5 d  9 6 s 2 6 p 2 configuration, in the electronic channel. The absolute values of the excitation cross sections of the dielectronic satellites were determined by comparison of their intensities with the intensity of the resonance l 132.2 nm line which effective excitation cross section was obtained by normalizing the experimental data on the theoretical calculation by the tight-binding method of two states of the excitation cross section of the 6 s 6 p  1 P o 1 level of the Tl + ion at the 100 eV energy. Conclusions: The energy dependence of the effective excitation cross section of the dielectronic satellites of the Tl + ion resonance line showed that the absolute values of their excitation cross sections are ~ 10 –16 cm 2 and are of the same order of magnitude with that for the resonance line. It is shown that the main excitation mechanism of the resonance line satellites is dielectronic recombination which effectiveness essentially depends on the ratio of the probabilities of the AIS radiation and electron decay. In the case of the relativistic Tl + ion a strong configuration mixing of levels leads to significant increase of the AIS radiation decay probability.

Charge exchange collisions between alkaline-earth ions and alkali atoms

Ludo Vermeeren, Peter Lievens, Anita Buekenhoudt +1 more

The ratio of the charge exchange cross sections for Ba + (5d) and Ba + (6s) on Na, Rb and Cs, for Sr + (4d) and Sr + (5s) on Na and Rb, and for Ca + (3d) and Ca - (4s) on Na have been measured for ion impact energies between 0.5 keV and 30 keV. For the collisions with Na, absolute charge exchange cross section values are derived using data for the resonant process Na+Na + as a reference. The results are compared to theoretical near-resonance predictions. A method is proposed to study the polarization dependence of the neutralization cross sections for reactions involving ionic D states.

Resonance excitation of autoionizing states in alkali atoms by electron impact

О. О. Боровик

In the work, the main results on excitation and decay processes of autoionizing states in alkali atoms are considered. As follows from the data on excitation dynamics of subvalence shells in an impact energy region from the lowest excitation threshold up to 600 eV, at threshold energies their electron excitation results exclusively from the formation of negative-ion resonances. At mean impact energies, the cascade population processes due to resonance excitation and subsequent radiative decay of the upper states play an essential role for the low-lying autoionizing states. By comparing with theoretical data, the absolute excitation cross sections for autoionizing states and negative-ion resonances were determined. The absolute autoionization cross sections as well as the autoionization contribution to the total single ionization cross section were also determined. Keywords: atom, ion, autoionization, resonances, ionization, effective cross section.

New light on the Kr−(4p55s2) Feshbach resonances: high-resolution electron scattering experiments andB-splineR-matrix calculations

Thomas Hoffmann, M.‐W. Ruf, Hartmut Hotop +3 more

In a joint experimental and theoretical effort, we carried out a detailed study of electron scattering from Kr atoms in the energy range of the low-lying Feshbach resonances. Absolute angle-differential cross sections for elastic electron scattering were measured over the energy range 9.3–10.3 eV with an energy width of about 13 meV at scattering angles between 10° and 180°. Using several sets of elastic scattering phase shifts, a detailed analysis of the sharp resonance was carried out, resulting in a resonance width of Γ 3/2 = 3.6(2) meV. By direct comparison with the position of the resonance, the energy for the resonance was determined as E 3/2 = 9.489(3) eV. A Fano-type fit of the higher lying resonance yielded the resonance parameters Γ 1/2 = 33(5) meV and E 1/2 = 10.126(4) eV. In order to obtain additional insights, B -spline R -matrix calculations were performed for both the elastic and the inelastic cross sections above the threshold for excitation. They provide the total and angle-differential cross sections for excitation of long-lived and short-lived levels of the configuration in Kr and branching ratios for the decay of the resonance into the three available exit channels. The results are compared with selected experimental data.
