Ordering and fluctuations in the ground state of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional S =1/2 XXZ antiferromagnets: A study of dynamical properties based on the recursion method

V. S. Viswanath, Shu Zhang, Joachim Stolze +1 more

The recursion method is applied to the T=0 dynamics of the S=1/2 XXZ model on a linear chain and a square lattice. By means of new calculational techniques for the analysis of the continued-fraction coefficients pertaining to specific dynamical quantities, we obtain reliable information on the type of ordering in the ground state, on the size of gaps in the dynamically relevant excitation spectrum, on the bandwidths of dominant structures in spectral densities, on the exponents of infrared singularities, and on the detailed shape of spectral-weight distributions. We investigate some characteristic properties of the dynamic structure factors ${\mathit{S}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}$(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) and the spin autocorrelation functions ${\mathit{S}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}$(\ensuremath{\omega})=${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ t${sum}_{\mathbf{q}}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}$(q,\ensuremath{\omega}), specifically their dependence on the uniaxial anisotropy, i.e., on the parameter which controls the type of ordering and the amount of quantum fluctuations in the ground state. We find, for example, that the different degrees of ordering in the planar regime of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems (criticality versus antiferromagnetic long-range order) have characteristic signatures in the dynamical properties which are conspicuously displayed in our results.

Spin-Tensor–Momentum-Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Xi-Wang Luo, Kuei Sun, Chuanwei Zhang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atomic gases provides a powerful platform for exploring many interesting quantum phenomena. In these studies, spin represents the spin vector (spin 1/2 or spin 1) and orbit represents the linear momentum. Here we propose a scheme to realize a new type of spin-tensor-momentum coupling (STMC) in spin-1 ultracold atomic gases. We study the ground state properties of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates with STMC and find interesting new types of stripe superfluid phases and multicritical points for phase transitions. Furthermore, STMC makes it possible to study quantum states with dynamical stripe orders that display density modulation with a long tunable period and high visibility, paving the way for the direct experimental observation of a new dynamical supersolidlike state. Our scheme for generating STMC can be generalized to other systems and may open the door for exploring novel quantum physics and device applications.

Symmetries and topology in quantum baths

M.T. van Caspel

In this thesis, I study dissipation in a number of one-dimensional models from condensed matter physics, by coupling them to a quantum bath. The main purpose is to see how the dissipation interacts with other properties, such as topological order and different types of symmetries. The first system studied is the Kitaev chain, a simple non-interacting model with topological order. The presence of a bath drives the system out of equilibrium and into a mixed quantum state, where conventional measures of topological order do not apply. I propose looking for certain dynamical signatures, that can tell us what happens to the topological order of the original system, once the bath is included. In addition, we study the dissipative Kitaev chain with periodic driving, which introduces a host of exotic new topological properties. Finally, I investigate the effect of dissipation on interacting models, such as the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, and how symmetries might help us analyze this effect. While the dynamics of such a model are very difficult to compute, certain observables like the total magnetization of the spin chain behave in a peculiar way. By studying the symmetry properties of both the system and the bath, I show that the dissipation causes the expectation value of the magnetization to relax in a simple and coherent manner, only adding an overall damping factor to the dynamics of the isolated system.
