Optical pumping and optical detection of the magnetic resonance of alkali-metal atoms in superfluid helium

Toshiya Kinoshita, Yoshiro Takahashi, T. Yabuzaki

By ${\mathit{D}}_{1}$-line optical pumping of alkali-metal atoms (Cs and Rb) in superfluid helium (He II), we could achieve large spin polarization of the atoms in the ground states, more than 50% for both electron and nuclear spins, especially for the Cs atoms. The alkali-metal atoms were implanted into He II by laser sputtering. We detected optically the magnetic resonances between the ground-state Zeeman sublevels, and found that the g values and hyperfine constants in He II were the same as in vacuum within the experimental error. We discuss possible applications of these spin-polarized atoms in He II.

Simultaneous Determination of the Spin Polarizations of Noble-Gas and Alkali-Metal Atoms Based on the Dynamics of the Spin Ensembles

Kai Wei, Tian Zhao, Xiujie Fang +4 more

We demonstrate a method for simultaneously measuring the spin polarizations of noble-gas and alkali-metal atoms. Under a low magnetic field, the polarized alkali-metal and noble-gas spin ensembles exhibit novel dynamics in the self-compensation and resonance regimes, which can be used to measure the polarizations. We perform this method on a $\mathrm{K}$-$\mathrm{Rb}$-${}^{21}$$\mathrm{Ne}$ comagnetometer with various operation temperatures and pump-light intensities. The polarization of alkali-metal electrons from 0.245 to 0.964 and the polarization of noble-gas nuclear spins from 0.01 to 0.065 are measured with relative uncertainties less than $12.4\mathrm{%}$. The measured polarizations are consistent with the theoretical model and are also verified by the traditional polarization-measurement method.

Elliptical polarization of near-resonant linearly polarized probe light in optically pumped alkali metal vapor

Yingying Li, Zhiguo Wang, Shilong Jin +2 more

Optically pumped alkali metal atoms currently provide a sensitive solution for magnetic microscopic measurements. As the most practicable plan, Faraday rotation of linearly polarized light is extensively used in spin polarization measurements of alkali metal atoms. In some cases, near-resonant Faraday rotation is applied to improve the sensitivity. However, the near-resonant linearly polarized probe light is elliptically polarized after passing through optically pumped alkali metal vapor. The ellipticity of transmitted near-resonant probe light is numerically calculated and experimentally measured. In addition, we also analyze the negative impact of elliptical polarization on Faraday rotation measurements. From our theoretical estimate and experimental results, the elliptical polarization forms an inevitable error in spin polarization measurements.
