Abstract

We study a tight binding model of ℤ3-Fock parafermions with single-particle and pair-hopping terms. The phase diagram has four different phases: a gapped phase, a gapless phase with central charge  ...

Phase diagram of an extended parafermion chain

Fabian Hassler

We study the phase diagram of an extended parafermion chain, which, in addition to terms coupling parafermions on neighbouring sites, also possesses terms involving four sites. Via a Fradkin--Kadanoff transformation the parafermion chain is shown to be equivalent to the non-chiral $\mathbb{Z}_3$ axial next-nearest neighbour Potts model. We discuss a possible experimental realisation using hetero-nanostructures. The phase diagram contains several gapped phases, including a topological phase where the system possesses three (nearly) degenerate ground states, and a gapless Luttinger-liquid phase.

Noninteracting tight-binding models for Fock parafermions

Edward McCann

We model p -state Fock parafermions on a lattice in one dimension (with occupation per orbital of 0 , 1 , ... , p − 1 ). For p a composite number, they may be mapped to q m -state parafermions where q m are the prime factors of p . For a Hamiltonian with a single-particle spectrum, the parafermions decompose into q m -state parafermions. When p is a power of two, the decomposition is into fermions. We use this to construct a parafermionic Hamiltonian for p = 4 with a single-particle spectrum using a fermionic tight-binding model which is bilinear in creation and annihilation operators. The single-particle levels may be determined by diagonalizing a square matrix whose order scales linearly with system size, and they are the same as those of the fermionic model. We show that the intermediate statistics of the thermodynamic distribution function for the occupation numbers (known as Gentile statistics) are consistent with the mapping to fermions, and we provide an example calculation of the internal energy and heat capacity for a simple linear chain.

Phase diagram of the two-chain Hubbard model

Young‐Ho Park, Shoudan Liang, T. K. Lee

We have calculated the charge gap and spin gap for the two-chain Hubbard model as a function of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the interchain hopping amplitude. We used the density matrix renormalization group method and developed a method to calculate separately the gaps numerically for the symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the exchange of the chain indices. We have found very different behaviors for the weak and strong interaction cases. Our calculated phase diagram is compared to the one obtained by Balents and Fisher using the weak coupling renormalization group technique.

Phase diagram of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in two dimensions

Biplab Chattopadhyay, D. M. Gaitonde

We consider an extended Hubbard model of interacting fermions on a lattice. The fermion kinetic energy corresponds to a tight-binding Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor (-t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$) hopping matrix elements. In addition to the on-site Hubbard interaction (U) we also consider a nearest-neighbor repulsion (V). We obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram of our model within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We consider ground states having charge- and spin-density-wave ordering as well as states with orbital antiferromagnetism or spin nematic order. The latter two states correspond to particle-hole binding with ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ symmetry in the charge and spin channels, respectively. For ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$=0, only the charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave states are energetically stable. For nonzero ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$, we find that orbital antiferromagnetism (or spin nematic) order is stable over a finite portion of the phase diagram at weak coupling. This region of stability is seen to grow with increasing values of ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$.
