Production of photon states from Λ-atoms in a cavity

Abstract

We analyse the system of Λ-atoms in a cavity QED of semi-transparent mirror and driven by laser fields. We derive effective models and connect concepts (photonic flux, input-output operators, photonic state) characterizing the propagation of the resulting leaking photons. We propose an atom-cavity non-resonant scheme for single-and 2-photons generation. The pulse shapes of outgoing single photons are tailored using a specifically designed driving field envelope. For the production of 2-photon states, two trapped atoms are used with two driving pulses. Their pulse shapes are characterized and it is shown that the multiphoton outgoing photonic states cannot be Fock states, since the photons are not generated strictly simultaneously.

Propagating single photons from an open cavity: Description from universal quantization

Astghik Saharyan, Benjamin Rousseaux, Z. Kis +2 more

Over the last decades, quantum optics has evolved from high-quality-factor cavities in the early experiments toward new cavity designs involving leaky modes. Despite very reliable models, in the concepts of cavity quantum electrodynamics, photon leakage is most of the time treated phenomenologically. Here, we take a different approach, and starting from first principles, we define an inside-outside representation which is derived from the original true-mode representation, in which one can determine the effective Hamiltonian and Poynting vector. Unlike the phenomenological model, they allow a full description of a leaking single photon produced in the cavity and propagating in free space. This is applied for a laser-driven atom-cavity system. In addition, we propose an atom-cavity nonresonant scheme for single-photon generation, and we rigorously analyze the outgoing single photon in time and frequency domains for different coupling regimes. Finally, we introduce a particular coupling regime ensuring adiabatic elimination for which the pulse shape of the outgoing single photon is tailored using a specifically designed driving field envelope.

Deterministic production of free-propagating Fock states of programmable photon number from a single atom-cavity system

Anahit L. Gogyan, S. Guérin, Claude Leroy +1 more

We propose a mechanism for producing Fock states on demand leaking from a single mode optical cavity interacting with a single atom and a laser pulse. The number of photons can be chosen, as it is determined by the Zeeman substructure of the ground state of the atom and its initial state. The deterministic generation of a free-propagating Fock state of $1\leq n\leq2F$ photons is achieved, when a circularly polarized laser pulse completely transfers the atomic population between Zeeman sublevels of the ground hyperfine state $F$ through far-detuned Raman scattering thus producing linearly polarized cavity photons. We describe analytically the evolution of optical field taking into account the spontaneous losses and the cavity damping. We demonstrate the possibility of production of Fock-state with different numbers of photons by using different transitions of the same atom. We show also that this technique provides a deterministic source of a train of identical multiphoton Fock-states, if a sequence of left- and right-circularly polarized laser pulses is applied. The resulting states have potential applications in quantum computation and simulation.

Multiple single-photon generations in three-level atoms coupled to a cavity with non-Markovian effects

H. Z. Shen, Y. Chen, T. Z. Luan +1 more

In this paper we show how to generate multiple single-photon wave packets of arbitrary temporal shape from an optical cavity coupled with $N$ three-level atoms driven by a driving field in the non-Markovian regime. We derive an exact analytical expression of the optimal driving field to generate such wave packets, which depends on two detunings of the cavity and driving field with respect to the three-level atoms. The cavity we use consists of two mirrors facing each other, where one is perfect and the other includes dissipation (a one-sided cavity), which couples with the corresponding non-Markovian input-output fields. If the first single-photon wave packet generated by the Markovian system is the same as the non-Markovian case, the Markovian system cannot generate the same multiple single-photon wave packets as the non-Markovian system when the spectral widths of the other environments take values different from the spectral width of the first environment, while setting the equal spectral widths for the different environments can generate this. The generated multiple different single-photon wave packets are not independent of each other, which satisfies certain relations with non-Markovian spectral parameters. We analyze the transition from Markovian to non-Markovian regimes and compare the differences between them, where the cavity interacts simultaneously with the multiple non-Markovian environments. Finally, we extend the above results to a general non-Markovian quantum network involving many cavities coupled with driven three-level atoms.

Coherent single-photon generation and trapping with imperfect cavity QED systems

David A. Fattal, Raymond G. Beausoleil, Y. Yamamoto

We study analytically the dynamics of cavity QED nodes in a practical quantum network. Given a single 3-level $Λ$-type atom or quantum dot coupled to a micro-cavity, we derive several necessary and sufficient criteria for the coherent trapping and generation of a single photon pulse with a given waveform to be realizable. We prove that these processes can be performed with practical hardware -- such as cavity QED systems which are operating deep in the weak coupling regime -- given a set of restrictions on the single-photon pulse envelope. We systematically study the effects of spontaneous emission and spurious cavity decay on the transfer efficiency, including the case where more than one excited state participates in the dynamics. This work should open the way to very efficient optimizations of the operation of quantum networks.

Deterministic production of N -photon states from a single atom-cavity system

Anahit L. Gogyan, S. Guérin, Claude Leroy +1 more

We propose a mechanism for producing $N$-photon states on demand leaking from a single-mode optical cavity interacting with a single atom and a laser pulse. The number of photons can be chosen because it is determined by the Zeeman substructure of the ground state of the atom and its initial state. The deterministic generation of traveling light of $1\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}2F$ photons is achieved, when a circularly polarized laser pulse completely transfers the atomic population between Zeeman sublevels of the ground hyperfine state $F$ through far-detuned Raman scattering, thus producing linearly polarized cavity photons. We describe analytically the evolution of optical field taking into account the spontaneous losses and the cavity damping. We analyze the photon statistics showing that it is close to Poissonian light. We show also that this technique provides a deterministic source of a train of identical multiphoton states with a definite number of photons if a sequence of left- and right-circularly polarized laser pulses is applied. The scheme expands the possibilities for using complex internal states of light to transmit data.

Coherent manipulation of the biphoton generation in cavity-QED system

Jia-Ni Yang, Xin-Yi Ling, Yuan Feng +2 more

We theoretically investigate the coherent manipulation of biphoton generation via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a cavity-QED system with a single atom. The atom is driven by pumping, coupling, and driving fields, and the generation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons are enhanced by two cavities. By solving the master equation in the steady state, we analyze the spectral brightness, as well as the degree of the auto-correlation and cross-correlation. Our results show that when the pumping and driving fields are in two-photon resonance, the dark state established between the ground and Rydberg states. efficiently enhances the controllability of the driving field over the biphoton generation and the quantum statistics. In contrast, under large two-photon detuning, the control capability of the driving field is significantly reduced. The coupling field, which directly relates to the electromagnetically induced transparency, modifies the linewidth of the biphoton, while the atom-cavity coupling strength only changes the brightness without affecting the linewidth.
