Stabilising a Ring Dye Laser to Iodine Transitions

Robert Saers

Saturation spectroscopy of Iodine is used to lock the frequency of a Coherent 699-21 Ring Dye laser. Without an external reference the laser frequency drifts several tens of MHz per hour. With the system presented in this thesis the drift has been reduced to a maximum of ±lMHz. Theoretical description of saturation spectroscopy and hole burning is given and the experiments are presented. In preparation for future experiments in quantum computing hole burning in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals and broadening of the hole by excitation of ions at different intervals have also been studied in this master's thesis.

Saturation of the Ca intercombination line and its application to spectroscopy and frequency standards

Frank N. Trager

Experiments were carried out using a Ca atomic beam and a tunable dye laser. Lamb dips were obtained in the fluorescence line of various Ca isotopes. It is shown that the narrow signals associated with saturation of the 4s2 1S0–4s4p 3P1, intercombination transition are potentially useful for frequency standards and highresolution spectroscopy. Measurements were made of the nuclear charge radii of six stable Ca isotopes. Radiofrequency transitions between excited state sublevels were studied. The nuclear quadrupole moment of the rarely encountered isotope 43Ca was determined.

Highly efficient phase conjugation in a laser-injection-seeded solid dye laser

Hirohumi Watanabe, Takashige Omatsu, Mitsuhiro Tateda

Summary form only given. Efficient phase conjugation in saturable gain medium solid dye has received much attention in application fields such as optical image processing, spectroscopy, and medical optics. For practical phase conjugators, an energy extraction efficiency, defined as a ratio of the extracted phase-conjugate energy to the total beam energy injected externally into the phase conjugator, is a more important parameter than the phase-conjugate reflectivity. We present an efficient phase conjugator by degenerated four-wave mixing in a laser injection-seeded solid dye laser. Energy extraction efficiency as much as 130 was obtained. The solid laser dye was composed of matrix polymethyl methacrylate with 0.1-0.2 wt.% doping of Rhodamine 6G dye.
