Abstract

The properties of the spontaneous emission from a three-level atom with an external driving field in a photonic crystal are studied. The population in the two upper levels displays complete decay or oscillatory behavior, depending on the initial atomic state and the relative position of the two upper levels from the forbidden gap. The intensity and the phase of the external field can also affect spontaneous emission from the atom.

SPONTANEOUS EMISSION FROM A DRIVEN ATOM EMBEDDED IN A PHOTONIC CRYSTAL

We have studied the spontaneous emission from a three-level atom with an external-driving field in a photonic crystal. As a result of quantum interference and photon localization, the population in the two upper levels displays quasi-oscillatory or oscillatory behavior. This depends on the initial atomic state and the relative positions of the two upper levels from the forbidden gap. The intensity and the phase of the external field can affect spontaneous emission from the atom. The properties are different from a three-level atom either in vacuum or in a photonic crystal without an external driving field.

SPONTANEOUS EMISSION FROM A THREE-LEVEL ATOM IN PHOTONIC CRYSTAL

YANG YA-PING, LIN ZHI-XIN, XIE SHUANG-YUAN +3 more

Spontaneous emission from a three-level atom in a photonic crystal is investigated. As a result of quantum interference and photon localization, the populations in the two upper levels displays oscillatory or quasioscillatory behavior. This depends on the relative positon of the two upper levels from forbidden gap and the initial state of atom. These Properties differ from those of three-level atom in vacuum.

The dynamical properties and spectrum characteristics of a-type atom with an external field embedded in threedimensional photonic crystals are investigated. With the help of numerical calculation and theoretical analysis,we find that the populations of the upper and lower levels will display periodic oscillation, and the frequency and amplitude of the oscillation will be greatly affected by the intensity of the external-driving field, the detuning. The spontaneous emission of the atom will be apparently influenced by the relative position of the upper level from the forbidden gap.

Spontaneous emission from a two-level atom embedded in two-band three-dimensional photonic crystals

San Chen, Xie Shang-Yuan, Yang Ya-Ping +2 more

We have studied the properties of the spontaneous emission from a two-level atom embedded in two-band photonic crystals. Due to the anisotropic two-band dispersion relation, the localized and propagating fields cannot coexist, this leads to the non-quasi-oscillation behaviour of the upper level population. Thus the upper level population will tend to a constant as time goes to infinity, or decay with time in a power law, or decay with time exponentially, different from that in the isotropic one-band dispersion relation case. These properties are directly related to the relative position of the upper level from the band edge and the width of the gap.

Spontaneous-emission enhancement and population oscillation in photonic crystals via quantum interference

Yaping Yang, Shi-Yao Zhu

Spontaneous emission from a V-type three-level atom in a photonic crystal is investigated. Quantum interference between the two atomic transitions affects the constructor of dressed states, and leads to an interesting behavior of the populations in the two upper levels: antitrapping, periodic oscillation, and no population inversion. Those properties depend strongly on the relative position of the upper levels from the forbidden gap and the initial state of the atom, and differ from that of a two-level atom in a photonic crystal. The emitted field, which is composed of localized mode(s) and propagating mode(s), is also studied. Quantum interference can enhance or reduce the energy of the localized field.

Dynamic properties of a Λ-type atom embedded in photonic crystal

Huang Xian-Shan, Yang Ya-Ping, 同济大学物理系,上海 200092

The dynamical properties and spectrum characteristics of a Λ-type atom with an external field embedded in three-dimensional photonic crystals are investigated . With the help of numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, we find that the populations of the upper and lower levels display quasi-oscillation, and the frequency and amplitude of the oscillation is greatly affected by the intensity of the external-driving field Ω, the detuning δ and the background decay of the upper level γ. Spontaneous emission of the atom is apparently influenced by the relative position of the upper level from the forbidden gap. Furthermore, the properties of the emission field around the atom are analyzed by means of s pontaneous emission spectrum.
