Faraday wave–droplet dynamics: discrete-time analysis

Matthew Durey, Paul A. Milewski

A droplet may ‘walk’ across the surface of a vertically vibrating bath of the same fluid, due to the propulsive interaction with its wave field. This hydrodynamic pilot-wave system exhibits many dynamics previously believed to exist only in the quantum realm. Starting from first principles, we derive a discrete-time fluid model, whereby the bath–droplet interactions are modelled as instantaneous. By analysing the stability of the fixed points of the system, we explain the dynamics of a walking droplet and capture the quantisations for multiple-droplet interactions. Circular orbits in a harmonic potential are studied, and a double quantisation of chaotic trajectories is obtained through systematic statistical analysis.

Stochastic discrete dynamical model for the hydrodynamic analog of a quantum mirage

Gonzalo Ferrandez-Quinto, Aminur Rahman

Recently discrete dynamical models of walking droplet dynamics have allowed for fast numerical simulations of their horizontal chaotic motion and consequently the long-time statistical distribution of the droplet position. We develop a discrete model for walkers on an elliptical corral with two dominant eigenmodes. These eigenmodes are excited periodically with each having random, but correlated, weights. At each iteration the model computes the horizontal propulsion of the droplet due to impacts with the fluid bath. The propulsion is calculated based on the interaction of the droplet with the wavefield produced by the eigenmode excitations. We record the long-time statistics, and incredibly for such a simple model, they are qualitatively similar to that of experiments.

Nonresonant effects in pilot-wave hydrodynamics

Pilot-wave hydrodynamics concerns the dynamics of droplets walking on a vibrating liquid bath, and forms the basis for the field of hydrodynamic quantum analogs. We here investigate a theoretical model that captures both vertical and horizontal drop dynamics. The model provides new rationale for a number of phenomena, including colinear swaying, intermittent walking, and chaotic speed oscillations, all of which are linked to variability in the droplet's impact phase. Our study also highlights the degeneracy in the droplet's vertical dynamics, consideration of which is essential for understanding the dynamics of droplets in confined geometries and interacting with standing Faraday waves.
