Dynamical Superfluid-Insulator Transition in a Chain of Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Augusto Smerzi, Andrea Trombettoni, P. G. Kevrekidis +1 more

We predict a dynamical classical superfluid-insulator transition in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical and a magnetic potential. In the tight-binding limit, this system realizes an array of weakly coupled condensates driven by an external harmonic field. For small displacements of the parabolic trap about the equilibrium position, the condensates coherently oscillate in the array. For large displacements, the condensates remain localized on the side of the harmonic trap with a randomization of the relative phases. The superfluid-insulator transition is due to a discrete modulational instability, occurring when the condensate center of mass velocity is larger than a critical value.

Dynamical classical superfluid–insulator transition in a Bose–Einstein condensate on an optical lattice

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We predict a dynamical classical superfluid–insulator transition in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in combined optical and axially symmetrical harmonic potentials initiated by the periodic modulation of the radial trapping potential. The transition is marked by a loss of phase coherence in the BEC and a subsequent destruction of the interference pattern upon free expansion. For a weak modulation of the radial potential the phase coherence is maintained. For a stronger modulation and a longer holding time in the modulated trap, the phase coherence is destroyed thus signalling a classical superfluid–insulator transition. The results are illustrated by a complete numerical solution of the axially symmetrical mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation for a repulsive BEC. Suggestions for future experimentation are made.

Phase diffusion in a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons

H.A.Q. Enneking

Research on the phase transition and phase diffusion between the Mott-insulator and superfluid phase has not yet been done extensively for the case of magnons. In this thesis we start from a model Hamiltonian for an easy-plane magnetic insulator and construct the phase diagram describing the transition between the Mott insulator and superfluid phase. Finally, we consider phase diffusion of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the superfluid phase and find that phase diffusion indeed occurs in a finite-sized system.
