Some observables as an indication of atomic nuclear shape phase transition

Abstract

Using interacting boson model, shape phase transitions from U(5) to O(6) and from U(5) to SU(3) are studied in the space of two control parameters. Some simple shape phase diagrams in terms of the order parameter and one of the control parameters are presented. Spectra and E2 transition rates are used to construct observables. It is shown that these observables exhibit the behavior of the shape phase transition, namely a peak structure at and after the critical point.

Scaling properties of quantum shape phase transitions in the interacting boson model-1

Elizabeth T. Williams, R. J. Casperson, Volker Werner

The evolution of system observables at critical points of quantum phase transitions in atomic nuclei is explored within the context of the interacting boson model-1. The evolution of energies and transition strengths in the ground state band at the infinite-size critical point are examined with respect to system size. Properties of first-order phase transitions away from the U(5)-SU(3) leg of the Casten triangle are examined, and the effects of angular momentum on the evolution of system observables at the critical point are investigated for the first time.

Quantum phase transitions studied within the interacting boson model

Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie

We study quasicritical phenomena in transitions between two "quantum phases" of a finite boson system, described by the interacting boson model 1 used in nuclear physics. The model is formulated in the algebraic framework and has a simple geometrical interpretation; the "phases" represented by dynamical symmetries U(5) and SU(3) correspond to spherical and deformed nuclear shapes. The quasicriticality of the U(5)-SU(3) transition is shown to be connected with the following phenomena simultaneously occurring in a narrow parameter region between the symmetries: (a) abrupt structural changes of eigenstates, (b) multiple avoided crossing of levels, (c) peaked density of exceptional points, (d) qualitative changes of the corresponding classical potential. We show that these spectroscopic features influence the dynamics of intersymmetry transitions in the model parameter space if the parameters themselves become dynamical variables.

Alternative characterization of the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition in the interacting boson model

L. R. Dai, Feng Pan, L. Liu +2 more

The quantum phase transitional behavior of an alternative characterization of the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition in the interacting boson model is explored. Specifically, the usual SU(3) quadrupole-quadrupole interaction is replaced by an O(6) cubic interaction, and the transitional behaviors of the low-lying energy levels, eigenstates, isomer shifts, $E$2 transition rates, and expectation values of shape variables across the entire transitional region are all examined within this context. A comparison with outcomes of the usual U(5)-SU(3) transitional description shows that the spherical to axially deformed shape-phase transition can also be described within this alternative context, especially near the critical point. However, with the O(6) cubic interaction the transition is considerably smoother than for the U(5)-SU(3) case, but with the nuclear shape less well defined, even in the axially deformed limit. It is also shown that the new scheme seems better than the usual U(5)-SU(3) scheme in describing the low-lying spectrum of ${}^{152}$Sm with X(5) critical point symmetry.

Quantum phase transitions in the shapes of atomic nuclei

Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie, Richard F. Casten

Signatures of criticality in the evolution of the nuclear ground-state shapes across the $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}Z$ plane are discussed. Attention is paid to specific data indicating sudden structural changes in various isotopic and isotonic chains of medium-mass and heavy even-even nuclei, as well as to diverse theoretical aspects of the models used to describe these changes. The interacting boson model and the geometric collective model, in particular, are discussed in detail, the former providing global predictions for the evolution of collective observables in nuclei between closed shells and the latter yielding a parameter-efficient description of nuclei at the critical points of shape transitions. Some issues related to the mechanism of first- and second-order quantum phase transitions in general many-body systems are also outlined.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in nuclear system and nucleon-pair transfer intensity

Lin CONG, Chang Xiu, Wenting Dong +1 more

Structural evolutions in the U(5)-O(6) quantum phase transition are investigated within the framework of the interacting boson model by comparing the two types of effective order parameters in the ground-state quantum phase transition and excited-state quantum phase transition. It is found that the monopole-pair transfer intensities can show critical behaviors not only in the ground-state quantum phase transition but also in the excited-state quantum phase transition. It is thus suggested that the main features of the ESQPT should persist in nuclear systems.

Evolution of spectral properties along the O(6)-U(5) transition in the interacting boson model. I. Level dynamics

Stefan G. Heinze, Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie +1 more

We investigate the evolution of quantal spectra and the corresponding wave functions along the [O(6)-U(5)] \ensuremath{\supset} O(5) transition of the interacting boson model. The model is integrable in this regime, and its ground state passes through a second-order structural phase transition. We show that the whole spectrum as a function of the Hamiltonian control parameter as well as structures of all excited states exhibit rather organized and correlated behaviors, which provide deeper insight into the nature of this transitional path.
