A Quantum Key Distribution and Access Scheme Based on Seafloor Observation Network

Ning Nie, Yuanyuan Zhou, Xuejun Zhou

Based on the Seafloor Observation Network, a scheme is proposed for underwater mobile platform to achieve secure communication by achieving quantum key distribution with network nodes and then accessing the backbone network. We construct a mathematical model of underwater quantum key distribution, and verify the feasibility of the underwater quantum key distribution and access scheme through simulation. The simulation results show that the quantum key distribution in clear, mixed and chaotic sea water can reach respectively the maximum secure communication distances of 339m, 56m, and 33m. It has a certain reference for the close-distance confidential communication between underwater mobile platforms and underwater network nodes.

Cross-Layered Security Approach with Compromised Nodes Detection in Cooperative Sensor Networks

Wei Chen, Liang Hong, Sachin S. Shetty +2 more

Cooperative MIMO communication is a promising technology which enables realistic solution for improving communication performance with MIMO technique in wireless networks that are composed of size and cost constrained devices. However, the security problems inherent to cooperative communication also arise. Cryptography can ensure the confidentiality in the communication and routing between authorized participants, but it usually cannot prevent the attacks from compromised nodes which may corrupt communications by sending garbled signals. In this paper, we propose a cross-layered approach to enhance the security in query-based cooperative MIMO sensor networks. The approach combines efficient cryptographic technique implemented in upper layer with a novel information theory based compromised nodes detection algorithm in physical layer. In the detection algorithm, a cluster of K cooperative nodes are used to identify up to K - 1 active compromised nodes. When the compromised nodes are detected, the key revocation is performed to isolate the compromised nodes and reconfigure the cooperative MIMO sensor network. During this process, beamforming is used to avoid the information leaking. The proposed security scheme can be easily modified and applied to cognitive radio networks. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm for compromised nodes detection is effective and efficient, and the accuracy of received information is significantly improved.

Quantum technologies result from the use of the laws of modern physics in increasingly sophisticated devices, promising enormous advances in computing, communication, and sensing, for both civilian and military use. As a consequence of technological progress that has miniaturized instrumentation down to atomic scales, we are witnessing the nanoscale manipulation of physical systems using intrinsic properties of quantum systems, such as entanglement. Quantum sensors are able to go beyond classical detection limits. Quantum communication offers a security advantage over classical communication. Quantum computing enables the solution of problems considered impossible to solve with classical computers. These technologies emerge as a result of advances in science and engineering, enabling the manipulation of systems at the atomic level. In this article we briefly present the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics, the main examples of quantum technologies in sensing, communication, and computing. We show military applications and conclude by presenting the challenges and opportunities.
