Operator entanglement in local quantum circuits II: Solitons in chains of qubits

Abstract

We provide exact results for the dynamics of local-operator entanglement in quantum circuits with two-dimensional wires featuring ultralocal solitons, i.e. single-site operators which, up to a phase, are simply shifted by the time evolution. We classify all circuits allowing for ultralocal solitons and show that only dual-unitary circuits can feature moving ultralocal solitons. Then, we rigorously prove that if a circuit has an ultralocal soliton moving to the left (right), the entanglement of local operators initially supported on even (odd) sites saturates to a constant value and its dynamics can be computed exactly. Importantly, this does not bound the growth of complexity in chiral circuits, where solitons move only in one direction, say to the left. Indeed, in this case we observe numerically that operators on the odd sublattice have unbounded entanglement. Finally, we present a closed-form expression for the local-operator entanglement entropies in circuits with ultralocal solitons moving in both directions. Our results hold irrespectively of integrability.

On the growth of operator entanglement in brickwork circuits with Yang--Baxter gates

Balázs Pozsgay

We study the operator entanglement of local operators in one-dimensional brickwork circuits whose two-site gate satisfies the braid relation; throughout this work, we call such a gate a Yang--Baxter gate. We establish upper bounds for several structured, overlapping classes of Yang--Baxter gates. We show that the operator Schmidt rank remains uniformly bounded in time for all qubit Yang--Baxter gates and, in arbitrary local dimension, for permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. We also show that it grows at most polynomially for involutive dual-unitary Yang--Baxter gates and for arbitrary phase dressings of permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. These results imply, respectively, constant and logarithmic upper bounds on the operator entanglement. Conversely, we construct a seven-state involutive Yang--Baxter gate without dual unitarity and a one-site operator whose exact operator Schmidt rank grows exponentially, although the corresponding operator entropies remain undetermined. Entanglement growth in the general Yang--Baxter case remains open. All proofs and selected examples were constructed by ChatGPT 5.6 Sol.

Fundamental charges for dual-unitary circuits

Tom Holden-Dye, Lluís Masanes, Arijeet Pal

Dual-unitary quantum circuits have recently attracted attention as an analytically tractable model of many-body quantum dynamics. Consisting of a 1+1D lattice of 2-qudit gates arranged in a 'brickwork' pattern, these models are defined by the constraint that each gate must remain unitary under swapping the roles of space and time. This dual-unitarity restricts the dynamics of local operators in these circuits: the support of any such operator must grow at the effective speed of light of the system, along one or both of the edges of a causal light cone set by the geometry of the circuit. Using this property, it is shown here that for 1+1D dual-unitary circuits the set of width- w conserved densities (constructed from operators supported over w consecutive sites) is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of width- w solitons – operators which, up to a multiplicative phase, are simply spatially translated at the effective speed of light by the dual-unitary dynamics. A number of ways to construct these many-body solitons (explicitly in the case where the local Hilbert space dimension d=2 ) are then demonstrated: firstly, via a simple construction involving products of smaller, constituent solitons; and secondly, via a construction which cannot be understood as simply in terms of products of smaller solitons, but which does have a neat interpretation in terms of products of fermions under a Jordan-Wigner transformation. This provides partial progress towards a characterisation of the microscopic structure of complex many-body solitons (in dual-unitary circuits on qubits), whilst also establishing a link between fermionic models and dual-unitary circuits, advancing our understanding of what kinds of physics can be explored in this framework.

Operator Entanglement in Local Quantum Circuits I: Chaotic Dual-Unitary Circuits

Bruno Bertini, Pavel Kos, Tomaž Prosen

The entanglement in operator space is a well established measure for the complexity of quantum many-body dynamics. In particular, that of local operators has recently been proposed as dynamical chaos indicator, i.e. as a quantity able to discriminate between quantum systems with integrable and chaotic dynamics. For chaotic systems the local-operator entanglement is expected to grow linearly in time, while it is expected to grow at most logarithmically in the integrable case. Here we study the dynamics of local-operator entanglement in dual-unitary quantum circuits, a class of "statistically solvable" quantum circuits that we recently introduced. We identify a class of ``completely chaotic" dual-unitary circuits where the local-operator entanglement grows linearly and we provide a conjecture for its asymptotic behaviour which is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. Interestingly, our conjecture also predicts a ``phase transition" in the slope of the local-operator entanglement when varying the parameters of the circuits.
