Monopole dynamics of Bose–Fermi mixtures in a three-dimensional optical lattice on a harmonic trap

Abstract

Motivated by recent developments in experimental studies of Bose–Fermi mixtures, we investigate monopole oscillation dynamics of Bose–Fermi mixtures in a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice and an external isotropic harmonic trap potential. We use dynamical Gutzwiller approximation and calculate time dependence of the average spatial extent of particles in a coexisting phase where superfluid bosons and metal fermions coexist. With the trap potential, the bosons concentrate at and around the center of the potential and the fermions surround the bosons. They begin to demonstrate monopole oscillations when the trap potentials are suddenly changed to the ones with smaller curvature. In particular, the correlation between the oscillations of the bosons and fermions is different depending on the condition of the initial confinement. We also show the case where only one of the two trap potentials is changed.

Ground-state and Excitation Spectra of Bose–Fermi Mixtures in a Three-Dimensional Optical Lattice

Rei Hatsuda, Emiko Arahata

Motivated by recent developments in the experimental study of Bose-Fermi mixtures, we investigate ground-state phase diagrams and excitation spectra for Bose-Fermi mixtures in a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice. The Gutzwiller approximation is used to identify a new phase in which both superfluid bosons and metal fermions coexist. As a useful probe to identify the quantum phases, we also calculate the excitation spectra. In Mott insulator phase, two excitation features appear in the spectra that correspond to particle and hole excitations. In superfluid phase, there are Bogoliubov modes and amplitude modes. In coexisting phase, two gapless dispersive modes are identified, which shift due to interaction between bosons and fermions.

Exploring phononlike interactions in one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Axel Gagge, Th. K. Mavrogordatos, Jonas Larson

With the objective of simulating the physical behavior of electrons in a dynamic background, we investigate a cold atomic Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an optical lattice potential solely affecting the bosons. The bosons, residing in the deep superfluid regime, inherit the periodicity of the optical lattice, subsequently serving as a dynamic potential for the polarized fermions. Owing to the atom-phonon interaction between the fermions and the condensate, the coupled system exhibits a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from a Luttinger liquid to a Peierls phase. However, under sufficiently strong Bose-Fermi interaction, the Peierls phase loses stability, leading to either a collapsed or a separated phase. We find that the primary function of the optical lattice is to stabilize the Peierls phase. Furthermore, the presence of a confining harmonic trap induces a diverse physical behavior, surpassing what is observed for either bosons or fermions individually trapped. Notably, under attractive Bose-Fermi interaction, the insulating phase may adopt a fermionic wedding-cake-like configuration, reflecting the dynamic nature of the underlying lattice potential. Conversely, for repulsive interaction, the trap destabilizes the Peierls phase, causing the two species to separate. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Excitation Spectra of Correlated Lattice Bosons in a Confining Trap

Dmitry L. Kovrizhin, G. Venketeswara Pai, Subhasis Sinha

We consider ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice with an external trapping potential. To study the excitation energies of the resulting Bose-Hubbard model, we develop a method based on a time-dependent generalization of the Gutzwiller ansatz. We calculate the excitations of the homogeneous system both in insulating and superfluid regime, concentrating particularly on those near the superfluid-Mott insulator boundary. Low-lying excitation energies in presence of a static harmonic trap are obtained using this method and compared with the homogeneous case. Further, we explore the dynamics of the center of mass and the breathing mode in response to time-dependent perturbations of the trap.

Effect of Interactions on Harmonically Confined Bose-Fermi Mixtures in Optical Lattices

Michiel Snoek, Irakli Titvinidze, Immanuel Bloch +1 more

We investigate a Bose-Fermi mixture in a three-dimensional optical lattice, trapped in a harmonic potential. Using generalized dynamical mean-field theory, which treats the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interaction in a fully nonperturbative way, we show that for experimentally relevant parameters a peak in the condensate fraction close to the point of vanishing Bose-Fermi interaction is reproduced within a single-band framework. We identify two physical mechanisms contributing to this effect: the spatial redistribution of particles when the interspecies interaction is changed and the reduced phase space for strong interactions, which results in a higher temperature at fixed entropy.

Transition of fermionic spectra and monopole oscillations under phase separation in the atomic Bose-Fermi mixture

Takaaki Sogo, T. Suzuki, Hiroyuki Yabu

We study the dynamical behavior of a Bose-Fermi mixture of trapped atomic gases which exhibits phase separation for a sufficiently strong repulsive interparticle interaction. For a dominantly bosonic mixture, the fermion density distribution and the associated single-particle spectra undergo a rapid change around the transition to the separated phase. Monopole strength distribution is studied in the random-phase approximation. The average energy calculated from the fermionic monopole strength shows a sharp minimum close to the transition point. The dynamical origin of the fermion single particle and collective properties is studied within a simple approximation.

Exactly solvable case of a one-dimensional Bose–Fermi mixture

Adilet Imambekov, Eugene Demler

We consider a one-dimensional interacting Bose-Fermi mixture with equal masses of bosons and fermions, and with equal and repulsive interactions between Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose particles. Such a system can be realized in experiments with ultracold boson and fermion isotopes in optical lattices. We use the Bethe-ansatz technique to find the ground state energy at zero temperature for any value of interaction strength and density ratio between bosons and fermions. We prove that the mixture is always stable against demixing. Combining exact solution with the local density approximation, we calculate density profiles and collective oscillation modes in a harmonic trap. In the strongly interating regime, we use exact wave functions to calculate correlation functions for bosons and fermions under periodic boundary conditions.
