Laser-Based Metastable Krypton Generation

M. A. Dakka, Georgios Tsiminis, R. D. Glover +6 more

We demonstrate the generation of metastable krypton in the long-lived 1s^{5} state using laser excitation. The atoms are excited through a two-photon absorption process into the 2p^{6} state using a pulsed optical parametric oscillator laser operating near 215 nm, after which the atoms decay quickly into the metastable state with a branching ratio of 75%. The interaction dynamics are modeled using density matrix formalism and, by combining this with experimental observations, we are able to calculate photoionization and two-photon absorption cross sections. When compared to traditional approaches to metastable production, this approach shows great potential for high-density metastable krypton production with minimal heating of the sample. Here, we show metastable production efficiencies of up to 2% per pulse. The new experimental results gained here, when combined with the density matrix model we have developed, suggest that fractional efficiencies up to 30% are possible under optimal conditions.

Lifetime measurement of the 1 s5 metastable state of argon and krypton with a magneto-optical trap

Hidetoshi Katori, Fujio Shimizu

The natural decay rates of the 1${\mathit{s}}_{5}$[${\mathit{np}}^{5}$(n+1)s${,}^{3}$${\mathit{P}}_{2}$] metastable state of argon and krypton are experimentally determined using a magneto-optical trap. The method to determine the lifetime of a metastable state from a fluorescence decay measurement is described. The obtained lifetimes are ${38}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}^{+8}$ s for argon and ${39}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}^{+5}$ s for krypton.

Optogalvanic Measurement of Even Parity Rydberg Levels in Krypton Gas.

Kandola,M S

An optogalvanic detection scheme, in conjunction with a single-step pulsed laser excitation has been used to measure the energy of even parity Rydberg levels in krypton. The excitation scheme starts from the 5s(3/2)2 and 5s'(1/2)0 metastable states, which have been populated in a He-Kr discharge tube. Measured energies were compared to either calculated or previously measured values. Calculated energies were obtained with the Rydberg formula using quantum defects extrapolated from the known low-lying levels. Keywords include: Krypton, Rydberg atoms, Atomic spectra, Optogalvanic spectroscopy.
