Abstract

The use of metal atom active media allows to convert optical signals with the transferring of the adjusted contrast. Due to the opportunities of metal vapor active media it makes possible to increase the intensity of the signal in the narrow spectral range. As a result, the signal-to-noise ratio can be dramatically increased. It makes possible to build active optical systems for high speed imaging of processes which are hidden by high intensive radiation. In the systems is available the image active filtration due to induced transition on metal atoms. Active optical systems with metal vapor brightness amplifiers (which is called Laser monitor), have shown the high efficiency for reducing the background radiation effect on the observing processes in the real-time mode. Moreover, the use of different active media makes it possible to change the spectral contest of the input signal with the increasing of the intensity. In the work the result of the research such systems are presented. The method of transformation IR images to VIS images is discussed. The work presents the results of the using of different active optical systems for high speed imaging.

AbstractResults of the development and study of an image brightness amplifier on manganese atom transitions for problems of object visualization in active optical systems are presented. The possibility in principle of using the developed active element for visualization of objects and processes in two spectral ranges—visible and near-IR—is shown. Profiles of the active element radiation beam at pulse repetition frequencies of up to 100 kHz have been obtained.

High-efficiency laser-pumping system for magnetic resonance imaging

Marziale Milani, Guido Baroni, Lorenzo Ferraro +3 more

Recently the demand for hyperpolarized noble gases is arising to improve NMR spectroscopy resolution for imaging. Hyperpolarization of noble gases is achieved by spin- exchange with alkali metal. atoms that undergo optical pumping by circularly polarized radiation. Optical pumping is usually achieved by high power semiconductor lasers. These sources have a bandwidth very large when compared with the transition bandwidth of the optically active species. This has two serious consequences: (i) the request of high power lasers, (ii) the losses that the unemployed energy delivered to the Rb vapor can provide in the efficiency of the energy transfer. Object of our investigation will be the comparison of two experimental set ups for optical pumping of Rb vapor where pumping is given in one case by a dye laser pumped by a UV nitrogen laser built in our laboratory according to the Blumlein scheme and in the other case by a semiconductor laser. Major elements that will be discussed are (1) the role of stimulated emission of Rb vapor to increase the pumping efficiency, (2) the fate of resonant photons that are emitted during Rb decays, (3) the role of applied magnetic fields in the efficiency of pumping processes.

Investigation of ASE contribution to copper bromide amplifier output signal

Nikolai A. Vasnev, Maxim V. Trigub

Abstract The paper is devoted to research the single-pass operating mode of active element on copper bromide vapors and time dependence of ratio «signal/ASE». The results show how the single-pass radiation power depends on time delay between ASE pulse and moment when the input signal enters to active element. Light waveforms (ASE, input signal, output signal) are recorded at each time delay. The minimal time delay was 5.2 ns, power radiation in this case was 3.47 W. The radiation power was reducing as the time delay was increased in increments of about 2 ns. The waveforms prove that the active element output signal contains two components: the first – ASE (amplified spontaneous emission), which is formed as result of the active substance atom excitation and their further spontaneous transitions; the second – single-pass radiation amplified by means of inverse population of the active media. The waveforms allow to estimate the useful signal to noise ratio or other words «signal/ASE». The highest gain is provided with the lowest time delay due to the population inversion is maximum in this case.

Distribution of energy in spectroenergetic converters

А. Д. Слободяник, Л. Г. Коваль, М. В. Лисий +5 more

The problem of research of spectroscopic converters of the optical and near-range range is considered in this paper. The theoretical model of such spectrogenerators operating in conditions of self-excitation of the system itself is offered. A model based on quantum radiation laws and interaction of radiation with matter has been developed. The block diagram of the spectrotransformer and the scheme of the unified transformation of wavelengths are presented. The method of transformation of the wavelengths of light waves is proposed based on the information-energy transformation of the light spectrum. The proposed method for transforming the wavelengths of light waves on the basis of the information-energy transformation of the light spectrum includes an effective working environment of resonant optical pumping of alkali metal vapors, which allows the population of the upper atomic levels to occur and predetermines the inverse population of relatively lower energy levels. This creates the possibility of spectral transformation of waves of a wide cosmic range in a predetermined interval of wavelengths. The problem of the investigation of spectroscopic and optical converters of the optical and near- range range is presented in this paper. The theoretical model of such spectrogenerators operating in conditions of self-excitation of the system itself is offered. The developed model is based on the quantum laws of radiation and the interaction of radiation with matter. The basis of this theory is the Schrödinger equation and its separate solutions are presented. Theoretical investigations of spectroenergetic converters are carried out. A systematic analysis of the quantum theory of radiation and its interaction with the most suitable media has been carried out. The obtained laws are suitable for solving the problem of energy transformation of different ranges of the energy spectrum.

Enhancement of the quantum efficiency of a fluorescence cesium filter

V. N. Kulyasov, В. Б. Шилов, Г. М. Ермолаева +1 more

The dependence of the quantum efficiency of fluorescence cesium vapor filters, which allow one to select with a high contrast the desired narrow-band signal against the background of broadband (solar) radiation, is studied. The most important characteristic of such filters, apart from the spectral band, is the quantum efficiency; i.e., the ratio of the number of florescent photons to the number of absorbed photons of excitation. It is experimentally shown that addition of a buffer gas to working cesium atoms can substantially increase the quantum efficiency as compared with that of working atoms in vacuum. The dependence of the quantum efficiency on the characteristic of transitions that are involved in population of atomic levels from which fluorescence occurs, and the processes resulting in an increase in the quantum efficiency of atomic fluorescence filters are considered.
