Universal three-body physics at finite energy near Feshbach resonances

Yujun Wang, Brett D. Esry

We find that universal three-body physics extends beyond the threshold regime to non-zero energies. For ultracold atomic gases with a negative two-body s-wave scattering length near a Feshbach resonance, we show that the resonant peaks characteristic of Efimov physics persist in three-body recombination to higher collision energies. For this and other inelastic processes, we use the adiabatic hyperspherical representation to derive universal analytical expressions for their dependence on the scattering length, the collision energy and—for narrow resonances—the effective range. These expressions are supported by full numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation and display log-periodic dependence on energy characteristic of Efimov physics. This dependence is robust and might be used to experimentally observe several Efimov features.

Universality and scaling in the N -body sector of Efimov physics

M. Gattobigio, Alejandro Kievsky

Universal behavior has been found inside the window of Efimov physics for systems with $N=4,5,6$ particles. Efimov physics refers to the emergence of a number of three-body states in systems of identical bosons interacting via a short-range interaction becoming infinite at the verge of binding two particles. These Efimov states display a discrete scale invariance symmetry, with the scaling factor independent of the microscopic interaction. Their energies in the limit of zero-range interaction can be parametrized, as a function of the scattering length, by a universal function. We have found, using the form of finite-range scaling introduced by A. Kievsky and M. Gattobigio [Phys. Rev A 87, 052719 (2013)], that the same universal function can be used to parametrize the ground and excited energy of $N\ensuremath{\le}6$ systems inside the Efimov-physics window. Moreover, we show that the same finite-scale analysis reconciles experimental measurements of three-body binding energies with the universal theory.

Efimov Effect in Ultracold Microwave-Shielded Polar Molecules

Shayamal Singh, Chris H. Greene

A quantum-mechanical description is presented for the three-body physics of shielded dipolar molecules, including a prediction of observable Efimov physics. Despite the anisotropic and long-range nature of the interaction, shielding enables a regime in which universality emerges already at the two-body level and extends to the three-body sector, where Efimov physics emerges. On the negative side of the scattering-length resonance, computed trimer binding energies display the characteristic scaling expected for Efimov resonances. Finally, the sudden approximation can be used to create trimer bound states, starting from positive energy trap states as a way to create or detect these molecular trimers. Moreover, the three-body parameter expressed in dipolar units is found to be universal.
