Phase coherence times in the multiple scattering of photons by cold atoms

Éric Akkermans, Christian Miniatura, Cord Axel Müller

We present an analysis of the dephasing present in the multiple scattering of photons by atoms with a quantum internal structure. The corresponding phase coherence times $τ_ϕ$ are obtained as a function of the Zeeman degeneracy of the atomic dipole transition and the polarization state of the photons. These results allow for an explanation of the recent experiments on coherent backscattering of photons from a gas of cold rubidium atoms where the height of the backscattering cone depends on the atomic internal degrees of freedom coupled to the polarization of the photons. Some consequences of these results are presented, and analogies with the case of electronic systems are highlighted.

Two types of cooperation between the photons in multiple scattering lasing and their possible application

N. A. Enaki

The two types of cooperative effects between the converted photons in the multiple steps of Raman lasing are proposed. The first type involves the cooperative process between the photons of one of the steps of Raman conversion. The second cooperative effect appears between the photons belonging to different steps of multiple conversions. This new type of generated coherent state is proposed by novel bimodal entangled sources, which take into consideration both the coherence and collective phenomena between the photons belonging to the system of the bimodal field obtained in multiple Raman emissions. For this, the creation and annihilation operators of the new resonator quasi-particle ware introduced taking into consideration the Hilbert space of field vectors at frequency differences, ωp+1−ωp between the anti-Stokes components of multiple Raman lasing. The application of higher-order multiple Roman bimodal coherent field quantum information is described in accordance with the definition of quantum amplitude and phase of such entangled states of light. The cooperative properties of the bimodal field in the multiple scattering processes of Raman lasing in the cavity/fiber and its interaction with ensemble of atoms prepared in coherent state are proposed. We introduced the new characteristics of bi-modes field in which the multiple Raman scattering takes into consideration the interaction with coherent excitation and non-stationary quantum fluctuations of the generation rate of the introduced quasi particles. Here, we represent the rate moments through the annihilation and generation operators of the cavity quasi-parties.

Mesoscopic scattering of spin s particles

Cord Axel Müller, Christian Miniatura, Éric Akkermans +1 more

Quantum effects in weakly disordered systems are governed by the properties of the elementary interaction between propagating particles and impurities. Long range mesoscopic effects due to multiple scattering are derived by iterating the single scattering vertex, which has to be appropriately diagonalized. In the present contribution, we present a systematic and detailed diagonalisation of the diffuson and cooperon vertices responsible for weak localisation effects. We obtain general expressions for eigenvalues and projectors onto eigenmodes, for any spin and arbitrary elementary interaction with impurities. This description provides a common frame for a unified theory of mesoscopic spin physics for electrons, photons, and other quantum particles. We treat in detail the case of spin-flip scattering of electrons by freely orientable magnetic impurities and briefly review the case of photon scattering from degenerate dipole transitions in cold atomic gases.
