Abstract

To offer commercial LDPC decoders with better performance, in this paper, multi-edge-type (MET) normalized scheme is proposed to improve the performance of traditional min-sum algorithm (MSA) and its modified versions. With respect to sum-product algorithm (SPA), we firstly analyze and find out that the degradations of convergence in different edge types are distinct in MSA theoretically. To compensate the different degradations above, proposed MET-normalized scheme is used in normalized min-sum algorithm (MET-NMSA). In addition, MET-based density evolution (MET-DE) is also presented to search optimized MET-scaling factors for MET-NMSA. To further verify the validity of MET-normalized scheme, Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 LDPC codes are used to evaluate MET-NMSA in comparison with the conventional algorithms, i.e., normalized min-sum algorithm (NMSA), offset min-sum algorithm (OMSA) and variable-scaling normalized min-sum algorithm (VS-NMSA). Extensive simulation results show that MET-NMSA for ATSC 3.0 LDPC decoders has at most 1.53dB, 0.21dB and 0.35dB gain over NMSA, OMSA and VS-NMSA respectively when frame error rate (FER) is at 10-4level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels using QPSK modulation.

Offset and Normalized Min-Sum Algorithms for ATSC 3.0 LDPC Decoder

Seho Myung, Sung-Ik Park, Kyung-Joong Kim +3 more

Offset min-sum algorithm (OMSA) and normalized min-sum algorithm (NMSA) are widely used in commercial LDPC decoders due to low complexity and reasonable performance. In this paper, we provide optimized offset and scaling values for those LDPC decoders based on Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 LDPC codes. Furthermore, according to extensive computer simulations, it is shown that the performance of the OMSA and NMSA with the obtained values is close to that of sum-product algorithm, even though the NMSA-based decoder may show a serious error floor due to a channel mismatch effect. Consequently, we recommend that the ATSC 3.0 transmitters use a concatenation of BCH outer code and LDPC inner code as channel coding, considering the use of NMSA for LDPC decoder in ATSC 3.0 receivers.

A Deep Learning based Multi-edge-type decoding algorithm for 5G NR LDPC codes

Tianyu Du, Hao Ju, Yin Xu +2 more

Low-density parity-check(LDPC) code has been selected as the channel coding method by 5G NR because of its excellent error-correcting performance. To further improve the performance of LDPC decoding, this paper proposes a neural normalized min-sum(NNMS) algorithm based on multi-edge-type(MET). Based on the LLR convergence analysis of the protograph matrix of 5G NR, the base matrix is divided into several independent regions. Each part is assigned a unique scaling factor at different iterations. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, We use two parity-check matrixes(PCM) derived from different base graphs in simulations. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs at most 0.45dB better than BP, 0.37dB better than NMS, and 0.25dB better than OMS, respectively, when the frame error rate (FER) is at 1$0^{-5}$ level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels using BPSK modulation.

Adaptive Quantized and Normalized MSA Based on Modified MET-DE and Its Application for 5G-NR LDPC Codes

Xia An, Chao Zhang, Kewu Peng +2 more

5G new radio (5G-NR) enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) scenario demands a high data throughput of up to 20Gb/s, leading to an urgent need for low complexity and high throughput decoding algorithms for 5G-NR low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the coding scheme of 5G eMBB data channel. Quantization of input and intermediate signals enables the data throughput enhancement and the computation and storage overhead reduction of LDPC decoder, but confronts the problem of performance degradation. In addition, conventional analysis tools show limitation on the accurate asymptotic performance prediction of quantized and normalized LDPC decoding algorithms. In this paper, we first introduce modified multi-edge type density evolution (MET-DE) to the asymptotic performance prediction of quantized and adaptive normalized min-sum algorithm (ANMSA). Then we adopt adaptive asymmetric quantization strategy for MET LDPC codes, combine it with conventional adaptive normalization technique, and further propose adaptive quantized and normalized min-sum algorithm (AQNMSA), which significantly alleviates the performance degradation of fixed quantized and normalized min-sum algorithm (NMSA) with negligible increment of computational complexity. Concurrently, we provide a novel look-up table design algorithm for AQNMSA based on the analysis tool of modified MET-DE. Finally, we apply AQNMSA to 5G-NR LDPC codes with a very low quantization bit-width of 4 bits for intermediate signals, and observe a comparable or superior decoding performance compared with its float-point non-adaptive counterparts under multiple code rates.

A Regional Message Scaling Min-Sum Decoding Algorithm for MET-LDPC Codes

Ying You, Guodong Su, Weiwei Lin

To offer multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes with better performance, this paper proposes a regional message scaling min-sum (RMS) decoding algorithm which improves the performance of the traditional min-sum (MS) decoding algorithm and its modified versions. The contributions of this study are as follows. First, based on the edge-type topology of MET-LDPC codes, we fully exploit their inherent structural information to develop a cross-region decoding architecture by dynamically partitioning the edges of the Tanner graph into three functional regions. Second, we introduce cross-region message scaling (CMS) factors to establish an asymmetric information flow control mechanism, which adaptively regulates the intensity of information exchange across regions. Third, by integrating the multi-edge structure, the cross-region decoding architecture, and the asymmetric information flow control mechanism into a unified framework, we propose the RMS decoding algorithm tailored for MET-LDPC codes. For various code lengths, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves a significantly lower error floor compared to the traditional MS decoding algorithm and its modified versions over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.

A Polygonal Line Min-Sum Decoding Scheme for Low Density Parity Check Codes

Yin Xu, Hao Ju, Dazhi He +4 more

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are widely used as error correction codes in new generation digital TV standards, such as the second generation of terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-T2), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, etc. The nonlinear belief propagation (BP) algorithm has excellent decoding performance for LDPC codes, but is often simplified in hardware implementations by linear min-sum (MS) algorithm due to its high complexity. This simplification also leads to over-estimation problems, which can be corrected by adding factors in conventional algorithms (e.g., normalized min-sum (NMS), offset min-sum (OMS), and variable scaling normalized min-sum (VMS) algorithms). However, the correction factors of these modified MS algorithms cannot adapt to different channels and modulations, and the performance needs further improvement. In this paper, the concepts of over-estimation value (OEV) and over-estimation rate (OER) are introduced to describe the over-estimation problem of the MS algorithm. Then, under the guidance of OEV and OER, a polygonal line min-sum (PMS) algorithm with correction factors adapted to different channels and modulations is proposed according to LLR distribution. Following the properties of OEV and OER, PMS algorithm is further simplified into Simplified PMS (SPMS) algorithm. LDPC codes from ATSC 3.0 are adopted in this paper to evaluate SPMS algorithm in comparison with the conventional algorithms. Extensive simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm for ATSC 3.0 LDPC decoder has at most 1.61dB, 0.24dB and 0.36dB gain over NMS, OMS and VMS algorithms respectively when frame error rate (FER) is at 10−4level over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with QPSK modulation. More importantly, the simulation results show that the SPMS algorithm can achieve much better performance than these modified MS algorithms over AWGN and Rayleigh channel with higher-order modulations or under limited maximum iteration number.

Parameter-Coupled Offset Min-Sum Decoding with Edge-Type Differentiation for MET-LDPC Codes

Ying You, Guodong Su, Weiwei Lin

To improve the decoding performance of multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes, this paper proposes an edge-type differentiated parameter coupling offset min-sum (EDPC-OMS) decoding algorithm. The contributions are threefold. First, we replace the traditional uniform compensation with edge-type differentiated compensation, resolving the mismatch between the decoding model and code structure. Second, we introduce a parameter coupling mechanism that enables joint optimization of multiple edge types while maintaining differentiated configurations. Third, a practically feasible design combining precomputation and look-up tables enables dynamic parameter adjustment with moderate additional overhead, achieving a favorable performance–complexity trade-off. Simulation results over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and Rayleigh fading channels demonstrate that the proposed algorithm adaptively selects offset factors according to channel conditions and edge types without introducing significant computational complexity, effectively lowering the bit error rate and enhancing decoding capability.
