Optimal approximate quantum error correction for quantum metrology

Abstract

For a generic set of Markovian noise models, the estimation precision of a parameter associated with the Hamiltonian is limited by the 1 / \sqrt{t} scaling, where t is the total probing time, in which case the maximal possible quantum improvement in the asymptotic limit of large t is restricted to a constant factor. However, situations arise where the constant factor improvement could be significant, yet no effective quantum strategies are known. Here we propose an optimal approximate quantum error correction (AQEC) strategy asymptotically saturating the precision lower bound in the most general adaptive parameter estimation scheme, where arbitrary and frequent quantum controls are allowed. We also provide an efficient numerical algorithm finding the optimal code. Finally, we consider highly biased noise and show that using the optimal AQEC strategy, strong noises are fully corrected, while the estimation precision depends only on the strength of weak noises in the limiting case.

Optimal approximate quantum error correction for quantum metrology

Sisi Zhou, Liang Jiang

The authors study the estimation of a Hamiltonian parameter under Markovian noise with the help of fast quantum controls. When the sensing time is long, the paper shows that for a generic set of Markovian evolutions, there exists an approximate quantum error correction strategy which is the best among all types of quantum controls and minimizes the estimation error asymptotically.

Precision limits for time-dependent quantum metrology under Markovian noise

Luca Previdi, Francesco Albarelli

We derive ultimate precision bounds for estimating parameters encoded in \emph{time-dependent} Hamiltonians in the presence of general Markovian noise, allowing for arbitrary adaptive protocols with fast controls and noiseless ancillas. Extending the minimization-over-purifications framework to time-varying continuous channels, we obtain a differential upper bound on the achievable quantum Fisher information (QFI) that can be evaluated at all times via semidefinite programming. For parameter-independent noise, we prove a universal long-time scaling law: if the coherent (noiseless) dynamics yields $Q_{\mathrm{coh}}(T)\sim T^{2k}$, then under Markovian noise the QFI scales at most as $Q(T)\sim T^{2k}$ in the DHNLS regime, whereas in the DHLS regime it is fundamentally limited to $Q(T)\sim T^{2k-1}$. We illustrate these behaviors on paradigmatic driven-qubit sensors, exhibiting $T^{4}$ and $T^{3}$ scalings under dephasing and spontaneous emission, respectively. Finally, we provide explicit continuous exact and approximate quantum error correction constructions -- supplemented by spin-squeezed probes -- that asymptotically saturate the bounds, establishing their tightness.

Optimal probes and error-correction schemes in multi-parameter quantum metrology

Wojciech Górecki, Sisi Zhou, Liang Jiang +1 more

We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility of achieving the Heisenberg scaling in general adaptive multi-parameter estimation schemes in presence of Markovian noise. In situations where the Heisenberg scaling is achievable, we provide a semidefinite program to identify the optimal quantum error correcting (QEC) protocol that yields the best estimation precision. We overcome the technical challenges associated with potential incompatibility of the measurement optimally extracting information on different parameters by utilizing the Holevo Cramér-Rao (HCR) bound for pure states. We provide examples of significant advantages offered by our joint-QEC protocols, that sense all the parameters utilizing a single error-corrected subspace, over separate-QEC protocols where each parameter is effectively sensed in a separate subspace.

Error-corrected function estimation advantage in multiparameter Hamiltonians

Erfan Abbasgholinejad, Lorcán O. Conlon, Sean R. Muleady +4 more

We establish the ultimate precision limits for estimating a function of multiple Hamiltonian parameters in the presence of Markovian noise. By reducing multiparameter function estimation to an optimization over effective single-parameter embeddings, we derive tight bounds on the quantum Fisher information. We identify a necessary and sufficient functional Hamiltonian-not-in-Lindblad-span condition for Heisenberg-limited scaling in time. When this condition holds, we construct a code that simultaneously removes the noise and nuisance Hamiltonian parameters while preserving the target signal. When it fails, we derive the optimal standard quantum-limit coefficient and show that it is asymptotically attainable using approximate quantum error correction. Finally, we demonstrate that direct function estimation can substantially outperform estimating all parameters individually and subsequently evaluating the function. This advantage can scale with both the evolution time and the number of parameters.

Achieving metrological limits using ancilla-free quantum error-correcting codes

Sisi Zhou, Argyris Giannisis Manes, Liang Jiang

Quantum error correction (QEC) is theoretically capable of achieving the ultimate estimation limits in noisy quantum metrology. However, existing quantum error-correcting codes designed for noisy quantum metrology generally exploit entanglement between one probe and one noiseless ancilla of the same dimension, and the requirement of noiseless ancillas is one of the major obstacles to implementing the QEC metrological protocol in practice. Here we successfully lift this requirement by explicitly constructing two types of multiprobe quantum error-correcting codes, where the first one utilizes a negligible amount of ancillas and the second one is ancilla free. Specifically, we consider Hamiltonian estimation under Markovian noise and show that (i) when the Heisenberg limit (HL) is achievable our codes can achieve the HL and its optimal asymptotic coefficient and (ii) when only the standard quantum limit (SQL) is achievable (even with arbitrary adaptive quantum strategies) the optimal asymptotic coefficient of the SQL is also achievable by our codes under slight modifications.

Improved Quantum Metrology Using Quantum Error Correction

Wolfgang Dür, Michalis Skotiniotis, Florian Fröwis +1 more

We consider quantum metrology in noisy environments, where the effect of noise and decoherence limits the achievable gain in precision by quantum entanglement. We show that by using tools from quantum error correction this limitation can be overcome. This is demonstrated in two scenarios, including a many-body Hamiltonian with single-qubit dephasing or depolarizing noise and a single-body Hamiltonian with transversal noise. In both cases, we show that Heisenberg scaling, and hence a quadratic improvement over the classical case, can be retained. Moreover, for the case of frequency estimation we find that the inclusion of error correction allows, in certain instances, for a finite optimal interrogation time even in the asymptotic limit.
