Demonstration of high-speed and low-complexity continuous variable quantum key distribution system with local local oscillator

Shengjun Ren, Shuai Yang, A. Wonfor +2 more

We present an experimental demonstration of the feasibility of the first 20 + Mb/s Gaussian modulated coherent state continuous variable quantum key distribution system with a locally generated local oscillator at the receiver (LLO-CVQKD). To increase the signal repetition rate, and hence the potential secure key rate, we equip our system with high-performance, wideband devices and design the components to support high repetition rate operation. We have successfully trialed the signal repetition rate as high as 500 MHz. To reduce the system complexity and correct for any phase shift during transmission, reference pulses are interleaved with quantum signals at Alice. Customized monitoring software has been developed, allowing all parameters to be controlled in real-time without any physical setup modification. We introduce a system-level noise model analysis at high bandwidth and propose a new 'combined-optimization' technique to optimize system parameters simultaneously to high precision. We use the measured excess noise, to predict that the system is capable of realizing a record 26.9 Mb/s key generation in the asymptotic regime over a 15 km signal mode fibre. We further demonstrate the potential for an even faster implementation.

Experimental demonstration of high-rate Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a local local oscillator

Yaodi Pi, Heng Wang, Yan Pan +4 more

In this paper, a high-rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) scheme with a local local oscillator is experimentally demonstrated. The transmission of quantum signal and pilot tone in optical fiber adopts frequency and polarization multiplexing technology. By optimizing frequency bandwidth, modulation variance and intensity of the pilot tone, the CVQKD system is demonstrated at different metropolitan distance, and the secure key rate of 13.53Mbps, 8.24Mbps, 5.39Mbps 3.66Mbps and 2.55Mbps over transmission distance of 5km, 10km, 15km, 20km and 25km are obtained, respectively.

25 MHz repetition rate pilot-tone-assisted Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a local local oscillator

Heng Wang, Yaodi Pi, Yun Shao +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate a 25 MHz repetition rate pilot-tone-assisted Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a local local oscillator (LLO) by employing the frequency-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques. In the proposed LLO-CVQKD system, the strong pilot tone and weak quantum signal can be separated in different frequency and polarization domain for avoiding the crosstalk between them and guaranteeing different detection requirements of low-noise for quantum signal and high-saturation limitation for pilot tone. Moreover, the dominant phase noise over 25 km optical fiber channel can be compensated in real time for supporting high secure key rate of 1.61 Mbps in the asymptotic regime.

Sub-Mbps key-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution with local local oscillator over 100-km fiber

Yaodi Pi, Heng Wang, Yan Pan +6 more

We experimentally demonstrated a sub-Mbps key rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) over a 100-km transmission distance. To efficiently control the excess noise, the quantum signal and the pilot tone are co-transmitted in the fiber channel based on wideband frequency and polarization multiplexing methods. Furthermore, a high-accuracy data-assisted time domain equalization algorithm is carefully designed to compensate the phase noise and polarization variation in low signal-to-noise ratio. The asymptotic secure key rate (SKR) of the demonstrated CV-QKD is experimentally calculated to be 7.55 Mbps, 1.87 Mbps, and 0.51 Mbps over a transmission distance of 50 km, 75 km, and 100 km, respectively. The experimentally demonstrated that the CV-QKD system significantly improves the transmission distance and SKR compared to the state-of-art GMCS CV-QKD experimental results, and shows the potential for long-distance and high-speed secure quantum key distribution.

High-Performance Fully Passive Discrete-State Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution with Local Local Oscillator

Yu Zhang, Xuyang Wang, Chenyang Li +6 more

We propose and demonstrate a fully passive discrete-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), which can eliminate all modulator side channels on the source side, using a local local oscillator. Using specially designed phase rotation and discretization methods, the CV-QKD system achieves a maximum fiber transmission length of 100 km at a repetition rate of 1 GHz in asymptotic security, with the corresponding secret key bit rate being 70.7 kbps. In composable security, secret keys are distributed at 25 km of fiber with a secret key bit rate of 1.66 Mbps. Our protocol significantly simplifies the architecture of CV-QKD system by eliminating the need for optical modulators and random number generators as well as presents robust practical security and superior performance, which is comparable to that of its active discrete-state counterpart. Overall, this protocol is expected to play an important role in quantum metropolitan area networks and quantum access networks requiring high realistic security.

Demonstration of an LLO CV-QKD system over 12 km of optical fiber

Christiano M. S. Nascimento, Artur A. Matoso, Gustavo C. Amaral +1 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) promises high rates and seamless integration with classical beams within a single optical fiber. Over the years, implementations have been performed by transmitting a local oscillator reference along with the quantum channel, opening security loopholes for eavesdroppers and limiting potential applications. Here, we report on a Gaussian CV-QKD implementation using fully independent transmitter and receiver lasers (local-oscillator sources) over a 12 km fiber spool. The system was experimentally evaluated using logical frames containing approximately $10^7$ coherent states, each composed of ten independently processed subframes of approximately $10^6$ states, and security was assessed in both asymptotic and finite-size regimes under a trusted-device model. The full-fledged classical post-processing is capable of recovering the channel parameters and extracting secret key rates of 5.11 Mbit/s in the asymptotic regime and 4.67 Mbit/s in the finite-size regime, showing good agreement with theoretical predictions. This work establishes the foundation for metropolitan fiber deployment of CV-QKD under strict security constraints.
