Statistical properties of a periodically modulated radiation in a multimode fibers

Abstract

We have measured the photon statistics of modulated laser radiation passed through a multimode optical fiber. A dependence is found of the photocount number variance on the average power of the radiation coupled into the fiber. The relations of the photocount probability distribution P(n) to frequency and percentage modulation of the radiation, as well as from length and excitation condition of optical fiber were studied.

Statistical properties of counting distributions for intensity-modulated sources

Paul R. Prucnal, Malvin Carl Teich

Statistical properties such as the cumulants, and the central, factorial, and ordinary moments are obtained for photocounting distributions when the incident radiation is intensity-modulated with arbitrary statistics. The results are applied in some detail to the cases of triangular, sinusoidal, and square-wave modulation of multimode superposed coherent and chaotic radiation. The coefficient of variation, skewness, and kurtosis are obtained as a function of modulation depth. Comparison is made with experimental data in the cases of triangular and sinusoidal modulation of a laser source.

A QUANTUM STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF A FREQUENCY MODULATED LASER COMMUNICATION SYSTEM.

Neil F. Ruggieri

In this analysis the quantum statistics of the received signal of a frequency modulated laser communication system are derived. In particular the detection statistics for heterodyne and electric field detection of the frequency modulated laser beam are determined. These detection statistics are used to define a measure of the communication system performance in terms of a signal to noise ratio. The development of the quantum electromagnetic field in terms of the photon annihilation eigenstates is the basis for determining these statistics. The derivation used accounts for fluctuations in the carrier, fluctuations due to background radiation introduced after modulation, fluctuations due to the local laser oscillator, and zero point field fluctuations. The results of this analysis indicate the probability distribution for the optical heterodyne detection is not a familiar one of classical communication theory, but it is of the form of probability distribution that satisfies experimentally measured photocount statistics of unmodulated laser radiation. The probability distribution for the electric field intensity detection of the frequency modulated laser beam is the familiar Gaussian distribution. (Author)

Photoelectron Counting Statistics of Light Transmitted through Multimode Optical Fiber

Manabu Yoshikawa, Norihito Suzuki, Tatsuro Suzuki

The photon counting statistics of light transmitted through multimode optical fiber are studied. We have measured the intensity correlation function of light scattered by polystyrene particles suspended in water using transmitted He–Ne laser light. The coherence characteristics are degraded for long fiber and also fluctuations in the intensity occur. The experimental distribution is represented well by the theoretical distribution. The intensity fluctuation is reduced when an incoherent light source is used.

Determination of Decay Times from Photocount Statistics of Weak Modulated Luminescence Radiation

Čestmı́r Koňák, Petr Štěpánek, L. Dvořák +3 more

The experimental and theoretical photocount distribution of modulated weak luminescence radiation are compared, and the Mandel-Rice formula with modulation is shown to describe well the photon statistics of this radiation. It is shown, combining the square-wave and the exponential modulations, that one can deduce with good accuracy the decay time constants from the photocount distributions of weak modulated luminescence radiation.

Quantum Statistics of Multiple-Mode, Superposed Coherent and Chaotic Radiation

Gerard Lachs

This paper is concerned with the determination of the quantum statistics of the photoelectric detection, and the E-field detection of multiple-mode superposed chaotic and coherent radiation. The Glauber P-representation is utilized extensively, and results are obtained by a fully quantum-mechanical treatment. The generating function, the mean, and the variance of the photocount statistics are derived for illumination times of arbitrary duration and for modes of arbitrary statistical interdependence. For short illumination times, the complete photocount distribution is obtained. The distribution has the same form as that for a single mode of superposed chaotic and coherent radiation. The multiple-mode distribution, however, is nonstationary. The difference between experimental determinations of the mean and variance which utilize periodic sampling and those which utilize random sampling is derived. A method for determining the P-representation for modulated fields is described, and the detection statistics are derived. The statistics of the E field are found to be Gaussian, and it is found that for multiple-mode classical statistics and quantum statistics differ.

Photocount time interval distribution for superposed coherent and chaotic radiation

Gerard Lachs, David R. Voltmer

There has been considerable interest in recent years in the statistical properties of optical frequency electromagnetic fields. Of particular interest is the study of photon bunching and the probability density for waiting time between adjacent photocounts. In this paper we derive an expression for the probability density of the time interval distribution as well as some other quantities of interest in photon bunching for the case where the incident radiation is comprised of superposed coherent and chaotic radiation of arbitrary spectral shapes. Calculations show that the key parameters are the average number of chaotic counts per coherence time and the ratio of the strengths of coherent and chaotic parts (signal-to-noise ratio).
