Abstract

In the Crossed atomic and molecular beams the chemical reactions of ytterbium and europium atoms with HCI molecules were observed at the laser excitation of atoms. At the excitation of ytterbium metastable states 3po and 3P2 an indicated amount of the reaction product was increased by a factor of three as compared to the case of 3P1 state excitation.

Laser-induced atomic-molecular reaction between atoms of the rare-earth metals ytterbium and europium and HCI molecules

Chemical reactions between ytterbium and europium atoms and HCI molecules were recorded in crossed atomic and molecular beams when the atoms were excited by laser radiation. When the 3P0 and 3P2 metastable states of ytterbium were excited, the quantity of reaction products was three times that when the 3P1 state was excited.

SOME PROPERTIES OF ATOMIC BEAM PRODUCED BY LASER INDUCED ABLATION OF Li TARGET

Mimoun Harnafi, Bernard Dubreuil

In this experiment, pulsed atomic beams produced in vacuum by laser induced ablation from lithium target are analyzed by laser-induced fluorescsence (LIF). As an application of this atomic beam production technique, the l-mixing processes induced in the n = 9, 10 Li Rydberg states by collisions with CO2 molecules have been investigated.

Formation of slow molecules in chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams

Timur V. Tscherbul, Ğirts Barinovs, Jacek A. Kłos +1 more

We demonstrate that chemical reactions in collisions of molecular beams can generally produce low-velocity molecules in the laboratory-fixed frame. Our analysis shows that collisions of beams may simultaneously yield slow reactant molecules and slow products. The reaction products are formed in selected rovibrational states and scattered in a specific direction, which can be controlled by tuning the kinetic energies of the incident beams and the angle between the beams. Our calculations indicate that chemical reactions of polar alkali-metal dimers are barrierless and we suggest that chemical reactions involving alkali-metal dimers may be particularly suitable for producing slow molecules in crossed beams.

Free-bound excitation and predissociation of ytterbium dimers near the S01−P11 atomic transition

Katsunari Enomoto, Ryota Takabatake, Takehiro Suzuki +3 more

A continuous excitation band of a free-bound photoassociation transition of ytterbium atoms is observed as a red wing of the $^{1}S_{0}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{1}P_{1}$ atomic line at 399 nm for a hot thermal vapor. The excitation to the ${0}_{u}^{+}$ molecular state is observed by monitoring fluorescence from the $^{3}P_{1}$ state atoms, which allows us to detect the production of ${\mathrm{Yb}}_{2}$ molecules with high sensitivity. The photoassociation is characterized in comparison with transitions to atomic Rydberg states. The time profile of the fluorescence signal suggests that the ${0}_{u}^{+}$ molecular state predissociates with states correlating to the $^{1}S_{0}+^{3}D_{2}$ atomic states.
