Characterization of the positivity of the density matrix in terms of the coherence vector representation

Mark Byrd, Navin Khaneja

A parametrization of the density operator, a coherence vector representation, which uses a basis of orthogonal, traceless, Hermitian matrices is discussed. Using this parametrization we find the region of permissible vectors which represent a density operator. The inequalities which specify the region are shown to involve the Casimir invariants of the group. In particular cases, this allows the determination of degeneracies in the spectrum of the operator. The identification of the Casimir invariants also provides a method of constructing quantities which are invariant under local unitary operations. Several examples are given which illustrate the constraints provided by the positivity requirements and the utility of the coherence vector parametrization.

CLASSICAL TENSORS AND QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT II: MIXED STATES

Paolo Aniello, Jesús Clemente-Gallardo, Giuseppe Marmo +1 more

Invariant operator-valued tensor fields on Lie groups are considered. These define classical tensor fields on Lie groups by evaluating them on a quantum state. This particular construction, applied on the local unitary group U(n) × U(n), may establish a method for the identification of entanglement monotone candidates by deriving invariant functions from tensors being by construction invariant under local unitary transformations. In particular, for n = 2, we recover the purity and a concurrence related function (Wootters 1998) as a sum of inner products of symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of the considered tensor fields. Moreover, we identify a distinguished entanglement monotone candidate by using a non-linear realization of the Lie algebra of SU(2) × SU(2). The functional dependence between the latter quantity and the concurrence is illustrated for a subclass of mixed states parametrized by two variables.

Automated construction of $U(1)$-invariant matrix-product operators from graph representations

Sebastian Paeckel, Thomas Köhler, Salvatore R. Manmana

We present an algorithmic construction scheme for matrix-product-operator (MPO) representations of arbitrary U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant operators whenever there is an expression of the local structure in terms of a finite-states machine (FSM). Given a set of local operators as building blocks, the method automatizes two major steps when constructing a U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant MPO representation: (i) the bookkeeping of auxiliary bond-index shifts arising from the application of operators changing the local quantum numbers and (ii) the appearance of phase factors due to particular commutation rules. The automatization is achieved by post-processing the operator strings generated by the FSM. Consequently, MPO representations of various types of U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant operators can be constructed generically in MPS algorithms reducing the necessity of expensive MPO arithmetics. This is demonstrated by generating arbitrary products of operators in terms of FSM, from which we obtain exact MPO representations for the variance of the Hamiltonian of a S=1 S = 1 Heisenberg chain.
