Generation of Slow Ytterbium Atom Vapor by a Laser-Dissociation of a Metal Oxide and Trapping by a Magneto-Optical Trap

Masami Yasuda

We demonstrate the cold emission of ytterbium atomic vapors from ytterbium oxide irradiated with a simple ultraviolet diode laser. Slow atoms are trapped by a magneto-optical trap using a dipole-allowed strong transition at 399 nm. Accompanying phenomenon of the emission of white light from the irradiated ytterbium oxide sample is preliminary investigated. This method will open the way towards a compact and transportable optical lattice clock.

Laser-Controlled Cold Ytterbium Atom Source for Transportable Optical Clocks

We demonstrate the cold emission of ytterbium atomic vapors from ytterbium oxide irradiated with a simple ultraviolet diode laser. Slow atoms are trapped by a magneto-optical trap using a dipole-allowed transition at 399 nm. The number of trapped atoms is larger than those loaded from a conventional Zeeman slower. This method will open the way for the development of a compact apparatus suited for transportable optical clocks and other applications.

Multichannel conical emission and parametric and nonparametric nonlinear optical processes in ytterbium vapor

Brian J. DeBoo, Derek F. Jackson Kimball, C.-H. Li +1 more

Collimated and conical emissions that appear when Yb vapor is illuminated by light pulses at 262 nm (near the one-photon Yb 6s2 1S0→6s7p 3P1 transition) are experimentally investigated. Conical emission is observed at multiple wavelengths. Parametric and nonparametric nonlinear optical processes are studied by investigation of the spatial distribution of generated light and the efficiency of light generation as a function of the incident light frequency.
