Effects of nonideal features of silicon photomultiplier on the measurements of quantum correlations

Abstract

We analyze the effects of some stochastic deviations from the ideal response in silicon photomultipliers that prove to be detrimental for the measurement of quantum properties of light. We demonstrate that an optimized operation mode can overcome some limitations of the detectors allowing the characterization of entanglement in mesoscopic twin-beam states.

Measuring nonclassicality with silicon photomultipliers

Detector stochastic deviations from an ideal response can hamper the measurement of quantum properties of light, especially in the mesoscopic regime where photon-number resolution is required. We demonstrate that, by proper analysis of the output signal, nonclassicality of twin-beam states can be detected and exploited with commercial and cost-effective silicon-based photon-number-resolving detectors.

Exploiting Silicon photomultipliers for measuring nonclassical optical states

Giovanni Chesi, Alessia Allevi, Maria Bondani

The search for optimal receivers endowed with photon-number-resolving capability has led us to consider Silicon photomultipliers for Quantum Optics experiments. By adopting an optimization procedure in order to reduce the spurious effects characterizing these detectors, we succeeded in detecting nonclassical correlations between the two parties of mesoscopic twin-beam states and in obtaining subPoissonian conditional states. These results put SiPMs forward for the implementation of Quantum Information and Communication protocols.

Optimizing Silicon photomultipliers for Quantum Optics

Giovanni Chesi, Luca Malinverno, Alessia Allevi +4 more

Silicon Photomultipliers are potentially ideal detectors for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information studies based on mesoscopic states of light. However, their non-idealities hampered their use so far. An optimal mode of operation has been developed and it is presented here, proving that this class of sensors can actually be exploited for the characterization of both classical and quantum properties of light.

Measuring Nonclassicality of Mesoscopic Twin-Beam States with Silicon Photomultipliers †

The study of nonclassical properties of quantum states is a relevant topic for fundamental Quantum Optics and Quantum Information applications. In the mesoscopic domain, promising results have been obtained using photon-number-resolving detectors. Here we show recent results achieved with the class of Silicon Photomultipliers: by a proper analysis of the output signal, the nonclassicality of twin-beam states can be detected and exploited.

Autocorrelation functions: a useful tool for both state and detector characterisation

Giovanni Chesi, Alessia Allevi, Maria Bondani

Abstract The calculation of autocorrelation functions represents a routinely used tool to characterise quantum states of light. In this paper, we evaluate the g(2) function for detected photons in the case of mesoscopic multi-mode twin-beam states in order to fully investigate their statistical properties starting from measurable quantities. Moreover, we show that the second-order autocorrelation function is also useful to estimate the spurious effects affecting the employed Silicon-photomultiplier detectors.
