Abstract

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution is adopted to avoid aligning the reference frames in realistic setup, which can guarantee the system security against the slow drift of reference frame. However, the relative motion of reference frame including deviation and fluctuation can influence the performance of reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution in practical experimental demonstration. In this paper, taking finite effect into consideration, the performance of reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with biased bases under reference frame deviation and fluctuation is presented to evaluate the effect of the relative motion of reference frame on our scheme, which makes the analysis conform to reality. Our simulation results imply that the key rates fluctuate periodically with the reference frame rotating, while declining with the reference frame fluctuation increasing.

Practical Reference-Frame-Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Systems Against the Worst Relative Rotation of Reference Frames*

Chun-Mei Zhang, Jian-Rong Zhu, Qin Wang

Abstract Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent QKD (RFI-MDI-QKD), immune to both the slow unknown drift of reference frames and detector side channel attacks, can generate information-theoretic secure keys. Despite its natural resistance to the slow drift of reference frames, the performance of practical RFI-MDI-QKD systems descends with the increasing drift of reference frames. In this paper, we demonstrate the worst relative rotation of reference frames for practical RFI-MDI-QKD systems, and investigate their performance against the worst-case scenario, both of which are unclear to date. Simulation results show that, practical RFI-MDI-QKD systems can achieve quite good performance even against the worst-case scenario, which clearly demonstrates that it is possible to implement practical MDI-QKD systems with freely drifting reference frames.

Decoy-State Reference-Frame-Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution With Biased Bases

Chun-Mei Zhang, Jian-Rong Zhu, Qin Wang

Reference-frame-independent measurement-deviceindependent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) can eschew the alignment of reference frames in practical systems and defeat all potential detector side channel attacks. Here, we propose the decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with biased bases. In this protocol, two legitimate parties Alice and Bob prepare signal states in Z, X, and Y bases and decoy states in X and Y bases, which avoids the futility in Z basis for decoy states and simplifies the operation of existing systems. Considering the security against coherent attacks with statistical fluctuations, we investigate the performance of the decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with biased bases in the environment of unknown and slowly drifting reference frames and make comparisons with the original decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD protocol under the same conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can increase the achievable secret key rate and transmission distance obviously compared with the original protocol, which is very promising in real-life QKD systems.

Practical reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution systems against the worst relative rotation of reference frames

Chun-Mei Zhang, Jian-Rong Zhu, Qin Wang

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) can generate secret keys with the slow drift of reference frames. However, the performance of practical RFI-QKD systems deteriorates with the increasing drift of reference frames. In this paper, we mathematically demonstrate the worst relative rotation of reference frames for practical RFI-QKD systems, and investigate the corresponding performance with optimized system parameters. Simulation results show that practical RFI-QKD systems can achieve quite good performance against the worst relative rotation of reference frames, which exhibit the feasibility of practical QKD systems with free drifting reference frames. Furthermore, we propose a universal estimation method of the secret key rate in practical RFI-QKD systems, which conforms to the nature of RFI-QKD more well than the usual estimation method.

Efficient decoy states for the reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Feng-Yu Lu, Zhen−Qiang Yin, Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan +9 more

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) is a novel protocol that eliminates all possible attacks on the detector side and the necessity of reference-frame alignment in source sides. However, its performance may degrade notably due to statistical fluctuations since more parameters, e.g., yields and error rates for mismatched-basis events, must be accumulated to monitor the security. In this work, we find that the original decoy states method estimates these yields overpessimistically since it ignores the potential relations between different bases. Through jointly processing parameters of different bases, the performance of RFI-MDI-QKD is greatly improved in terms of the secret key rate and achievable distance when statistical fluctuations are considered (the statistical fluctuation analysis is the first step to the final analysis of the finite key size effect). Our results pave an avenue towards practical RFI-MDI-QKD.

Study of practical state-preparation error tolerant reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution protocol

Yang Zhou, Xiao Ma, Xingyu Zhou +2 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables the establishment of shared keys between two distant users, Alice and Bob, based on the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, and it has proven to possess information-theoretic security. In most of QKD systems, Alice and Bob require a shared reference frame, and real-time calibration of the reference frame increases system costs and reduces its performance. Fortunately, the reference-frame-independent QKD protocol has been proposed, overcoming reference-frame drift issues and receiving widespread attention. However, in practical QKD systems, the non-ideal characteristics of realistic devices introduce certain inconsistency between the theory and the practice. In real-world quantum key distribution systems, device imperfections can lead to security vulnerabilities, thereby reducing system security. For example, imperfections in the encoding apparatus at the source end may result in errors in the quantum states. The inherent defects in the detection part may cause after-pulse effects and dead-time effects, thus reducing the key rate. Therefore, in this work, we propose a practical state-preparation error tolerant reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution protocol by taking imperfections in both the source and the detectors into account. Moreover, a three-intensity decoy-state scheme for modeling analysis and numerical simulations is employed. In this protocol, we reduce the influence of state-preparation errors on the key rate by utilizing virtual state methods to precisely estimate the phase-error rate. Furthermore, by characterizing the effects of after-pulses and dead-time on the key rate, our protocol exhibits higher robustness and can effectively address issues related to detector imperfections. This approach can also be extended to other quantum key distribution protocols with higher security levels, such as measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol and twin-field quantum key distribution, further mitigating the influence of device imperfections on practical implementation of QKD system. Therefore, our present work provide important reference value for putting the quantum key distributions into practical application.

Reference frame independent and measurement device independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) has the advantages of being immune to detector side loopholes and misalignment of the reference frame. However, several former related research works are based on the unrealistic assumption of perfect source preparation. In this paper, we merge a loss-tolerant method into RFI-MDI-QKD to consider source flaws into key rate estimation and compare it with quantum coin method.Based on a reliable experimental scheme, the joint influence of both source flaws and reference frame misalignment is discussed with consideration of the finite-key effect. The results show that the loss-tolerant RFI-MDI-QKD protocol can reach longer key rate performance while considering the existence of source flaws in a real-world implementation.
