Low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes are capable of achieving excellent performance with low encoding and decoding complexity. In this paper we discuss several graph-cover-based methods for deriving families of time-invariant and time-varying LDPC convolutional codes from LDPC block codes and show how earlier proposed LDPC convolutional code constructions can be presented within this framework. Some of the constructed convolutional codes significantly outperform the underlying LDPC block codes. We investigate some possible reasons for this "convolutional gain," and we also discuss the --- mostly moderate --- decoder cost increase that is incurred by going from LDPC block to LDPC convolutional codes.

Ensemble of high performance structured binary convolutional LDPC codes with moderate rates

Liwei Mu

An algebraic construction methodology is proposed to design binary time-invariant convolutional low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Assisted by a proposed partial search algorithm, the polynomialform parity-check matrix of the time-invariant convolutional LDPC code is derived by combining some special codewords of an (n, 2, n - 1) code. The achieved convolutional LDPC codes possess the characteristics of comparatively large girth and given syndrome former memory. The objective of our design is to enable the time-invariant convolutional LDPC codes the advantages of excellent error performance and fast encoding. In particular, the error performance of the proposed convolutional LDPC code with small constraint length is superior to most existing convolutional LDPC codes.

New Ensemble of Time-invariant LDPC Convolutional Codes with High Performance

Liwei Mu, Xingcheng Liu, Zhang Han

③ Abstract: In this paper, a new ensemble of the polynomial matrix of a time-invariant LDPC convolutional code is proposed. Based on the method of deriving time-invariant LDPC convolutional codes from QC (Quasi-Cyclic)- LDPC block codes, the elements over finite fields are used to generate directly the polynomial parity-check matrices of LDPC convolutional codes. A concrete example of using MDS (Maximum-Distance Separable) convolutional codes to derive the polynomial matrices is given. The proposed method ensures the fast encoding property, maximum encoding memory and designed rate. Simulation results show that the proposed LDPC convolutional codes exhibit low error floor and good decoding performance under BP (Belief Propagation) decoding algorithm over AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel.
