Abstract

We theoretically propose a dual-channel bistable switch based on a monolayer Z-shaped graphene nanoribbon nanoresonator (NR) coupled to a metal nanoparticle (MNP). We show that the bistable nonlinear absorption response can be realized due to a competition and combination of the exciton-plasmon and exciton-phonon interactions. We map out two-dimensional and three-dimensional bistability phase diagrams, which reveal clearly the dynamical evolution of the roles played by these two interactions in managing optical bistability (OB) at all stages. Specifically, the bistable switch proposed can be controlled via a single channel or dual channels by only adjusting the intensity or frequency of the pump field. In/outside these channels, the switch will be turned on/off. The results obtained here not only can be employed to measure precisely the distance between the MNP and the NR but also provide promising applications in optical switching and optical storage.

Control of dual-channel optical bistability in a carbon nanotube nanoresonator coupled with a metallic nanoshell

Lin-Wen Long, Wen-Hua Zhao, Yuxiang Peng +3 more

We theoretically present a flexible method to obtain dual-channel optical bistability (OB) in a coupled system consisting of a metallic nanoshell (MNS) and a carbon nanotube (CNT) nanomechanical resonator (NR) beyond the dipole approximation. The MNS is made of a metallic core and a dielectric shell. The results show that, the four-wave mixing signal is suppressed significantly due to multipole polarizations in comparison to that in the dipole approximation. Also, the four-wave mixing signal can be enhanced greatly with the exciton-phonon coupling strength g increasing. Especially, bistability phase diagrams plotted show that, for a given shell thickness, it is realizable to achieve one (or two) bistable region(s) by adjusting the pumping intensity (or the MNS-NR distance). In a strong exciton-plasmon coupling regime, OB can be switched from single-channel to dual-channel by only changing the dielectric shell thickness or the metallic core radius. This indicates that the system proposed can behave as a channel-tunable bistable switch. Our findings may have potential applications in various domains such as quantum communication and optical functional devices.

Plasmon-assisted channel-tunable bistable states in a monolayer MoS 2 nanoresonator coupled to a metallic nanoshell

Jian-Bo Li, Hong-Mei Gong, Yu-Xiang Peng +3 more

We study how to obtain the channel-tunable bistable states in a coupled system consisting of a monolayer MoS 2 nanomechanical resonator (NR) and a metallic nanoshell (MNS) beyond the dipole approximation. The MNS is constructed by a metallic core and a dielectric shell. The calculated results show that the linear absorption spectrum exhibits some new features, such as three-phonon resonance, Rayleigh resonance, and ac-Stark resonance. In a strong exciton-plasmon coupling regime, the absorption peak and amplification peak in the absorption spectrum can be greatly enhanced by adjusting the exciton-phonon coupling strength. Especially, we plot the bistability phase diagrams in the system’s parameter space and highlight the strong dependency of the lower (upper) bistable threshold on the pumping intensity, the MNS-NR distance, and the dielectric shell thickness. The ratio of linear absorption in the upper and lower stable states can reach 42. For a given MNS with a fixed shell thickness, it is easy to achieve single-channel or dual-channel bistable states by only adjusting the exciton-phonon coupling strength via modulation of the length of the MoS 2 nanosheet along the NR axis. The findings obtained here are very useful for extensive applications such as optical memory cells and channel-tunable bistable switches.

Plasmon-modulated bistable four-wave mixing signals from a metal nanoparticle-monolayer MoS 2 nanoresonator hybrid system

Abstract We present a study for the impact of exciton-phonon and exciton-plasmon interactions on bistable four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in a metal nanoparticle (MNP)-monolayer MoS 2 nanoresonator hybrid system. Via tracing the FWM response we predict that, depending on the excitation conditions and the system parameters, such a system exhibits ‘U-shaped’ bistable FWM signals. We also map out bistability phase diagrams within the system’s parameter space. Especially, we show that compared with the exciton-phonon interaction, a strong exciton-plasmon interaction plays a dominant role in the generation of optical bistability, and the bistable region will be greatly broadened by shortening the distance between the MNP and the monolayer MoS 2 nanoresonator. In the weak exciton-plasmon coupling regime, the impact of exciton-phonon interaction on optical bistability will become obvious. The scheme proposed may be used for building optical switches and logic-gate devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.

Pump-probe response, four-wave mixing and self-Kerr effect in a suspended monolayer Z-shaped graphene nanoribbon nanoresonator

Spyridon G. Kosionis, Emmanuel Paspalakis

We study the pump-probe optical response and the third-order self-Kerr nonlinearity of a localized exciton coupled to a suspended monolayer Z-shaped graphene nanoribbon nanoresonator, while it is strongly pumped by a near-resonant electromagnetic field. We derive the quantum Langevin equations that govern the dynamics of the electron population and after expanding the physical quantities involved in a third-order series with respect to the probe field Rabi frequency, we obtain a set of density matrix differential equations. Analytical expressions for the effective linear optical susceptibility and the four-wave mixing coefficient are derived, while the third-order optical susceptibility is calculated numerically. We investigate the modification of the characteristics of the spectra related to these effects for different values of the pump field Rabi frequency, within and outside the bistability region. In the low pump field intensity regime, we detect on the spectra two doublets of resonances with quite different widths, while, in the high pump field intensity regime, the spectral profiles come as a consequence of superimposing a doublet of sharp resonances on the corresponding optical response exhibited by an uncoupled two-level system. This work may find applications in the creation of nonlinear nanophotonic devices for ultrafast optical switching and ultra-sensitive optical sensing.

Terahertz Optical Bistability in the Metal Nanoparticles-Graphene Nanodisks-Quantum Dots Hybrid Systems

Mariam M. Tohari

We theoretically investigate the optical bistability in the metal nanoparticles-graphene nanodisks-quantum dots hybrid plasmonic system in the infrared regime of the electromagnetic radiation. The quantum dot is considered to be a three-level atomic-like system of Λ type interacting with probe and control fields. By using the standard model of the optical bistability where a nonlinear medium is situated in an optical ring cavity, we numerically solve the equation of motion for the density matrix elements that describe the dynamics of the system in steady-state conditions along with the boundary conditions of the cavity to analyze the optical bistability of the system. The effect of the geometrical features of the system and the parameters of the interacting fields including the strength and detuning of the fields on the optical bistability behavior are investigated. Our proposed hybrid plasmonic system shows an ultralow-threshold controllable optical bistability, providing a promising platform for optical bistable devices at the terahertz, such as all-optical switches and biosensors.

Surface plasmon-assisted optical bistability in the quantum dot-metal nanoparticle hybrid system

Chengjun Bao, Yihong Qi, Yueping Niu +1 more

We theoretically investigated optical bistability (OB) of a coupled excition–plasmon hybrid system in a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that the threshold and the region of OB can be tuned by adjusting the center–center distance between the quantum dot and metal nanoparticle (MNP), the Rabi frequency of the control field and the radius of the MNP. Due to the significantly enhanced optical nonlinearity by the surface plasmon effect, the threshold of OB can be decreased greatly when the probe field is parallel to the major axis of the hybrid system. The enhanced OB may have promising applications in optical switching and optical storage.
