Dynamics of Trapped Ions in the Presence of Laser Cooling and Radio-Frequency Heating

We establish a theoretical model which quantitatively describes the dynamics of laser cooled ions confined in a radio-frequency (rf) trap. In our model the laser cooling efficiency and the rate of collisional radio-frequency (rf) heating are explicitly formulated. Considering the balance between these two effects, the ion temperature is determined at each trap parameter. This model precisely reproduces the laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) line profile observed for 24 Mg+ ions.

Dynamics of confined ions driven by light beams: A singular perturbation approach

Luis G. Reyna, JORGE R. SOBEHART

The probability distribution of a two-level ion confined in a time-dependent nonlinear trapping field and driven by a radiation field is calculated using an alternative treatment based on a singular asymptotic expansion. It is assumed that the ion is excited by electromagnetic radiation and relaxes back irreversibly by spontaneous emission. The present calculations reproduce the quantum results of the laser cooling of ions in static traps in the heavy-particle limit, and previous classical treatments for the confinement and cooling of ions in radio-frequency traps.

Charge transfer between a laser-cooled ion and a thermal atom in a radio-frequency trap

Taro Hasegawa

The charge transfer process between a laser-cooled magnesium ion and a thermal barium atom in a radio-frequency ion trap in extremely low energy regime is observed. The merit of using the trap is that the generated ions are also confined in the trap. The occurrence of the charge transfer process is confirmed by the detection of the laser-induced fluorescence from the generated ions. The cross section of the process is estimated to be 10−3 Å2∼10−1 Å2.
