Sub-cycle attosecond control in frustrated double ionization of molecules with orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields

Vilà, A., G. P. Katsoulis, Agapi Emmanouilidou

We demonstrate sub-cycle control of frustrated double ionization (FDI) in the two-electron triatomic molecule D$_3^+$ when driven by two orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields. We employ a three-dimensional semi-classical model that fully accounts for the electron and nuclear motion in strong fields. We control FDI triggered by a strong near-infrared laser field with a weak mid-infrared laser field. This control as a function of the time delay between the two pulses is demonstrated when the FDI probability and the distribution of the momentum of the escaping electron along the mid-infrared laser field are considered in conjunction. We find that the momentum distribution of the escaping electron has a hive-shape with features that can accurately be mapped to the time one of the two electrons tunnel-ionizes at the start of the break-up process. This mapping distinguishes consecutive tunnel-ionization times within a cycle of the mid-infrared laser field.

Electric-field-induced quantum coherence of the intersubband transition in semiconductor quantum wells

Yang Zhao, Danhong Huang, Cunkai Wu

An intense coherent laser field couples two electron subbands in quantum wells. Using generalized self-consistent density functional theory, we study the nature of the Coulomb and light-induced electronic renormalization. We show electric-field-induced transparency and light amplification without population inversion of a weak probe beam in such a system. The effects of the pump field strength, electron density, and delta-doping position are investigated.

Laser-induced detachment processes in an electric field

Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace

An analytic momentum-space wave function for an electron in both laser and static uniform electric fields is presented. It is used to obtain analytic multiphoton detachment cross sections in a static, uniform electric field which include effects of static-field-induced electron-photon interactions. These general results are not restricted to weak laser intensities or to weak static-field strengths and depend only on (a) the electric dipole approximation and (b) the approximation that final-state electron-atom interactions are ignored. Four specific predictions of our general formulas for the most interesting case of linearly polarized light polarized along the static-field direction are presented for weakly bound electrons initially in an s state. First, the effects of a weak static electric field on N-photon detachment cross sections near threshold are shown to be described by two modulation factors, one for odd N and one for even N, which depend only on a scaled energy. Second, for photodetachment in a static electric field, effects of static-field-induced electron-photon interactions are demonstrated. Third, the lifetime against field ionization is presented. Fourth, the cross section for electric-field-induced stimulated emission is presented. Numerical results for the latter three effects are presented for the ${\mathrm{H}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ ion. The simpler case of circularly polarized light directed along the static-electric-field direction is treated briefly. In particular, we show for this case that the static- and laser-field effects are uncoupled and that the near-threshold, weak static-electric-field modulation factors for the N-photon detachment cross sections are dependent on N.
