Generation of Dark-Bright Soliton Trains in Superfluid-Superfluid Counterflow

Chris Hamner, JiaJia Chang, Peter Engels +1 more

The dynamics of two penetrating superfluids exhibit an intriguing variety of nonlinear effects. Using two distinguishable components of a Bose-Einstein condensate, we investigate the counterflow of two superfluids in a narrow channel. We present the first experimental observation of trains of dark-bright solitons generated by the counterflow. Our observations are theoretically interpreted by three-dimensional numerical simulations for the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and the analysis of a jump in the two relatively flowing components' densities. Counterflow-induced modulational instability for this miscible system is identified as the central process in the dynamics.

Detecting paired and counterflow superfluidity via dipole oscillations

Anzi Hu, Ludwig Mathey, Eite Tiesinga +3 more

We suggest an experimentally feasible procedure to observe counterflow and paired superfluidity in ultracold atom systems. We study the time evolution of one-dimensional mixtures of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice following an abrupt displacement of an additional weak confining potential. We find that the dynamic responses of the paired superfluid phase for attractive interspecies interactions and the counterflow superfluid phase for repulsive interactions are qualitatively distinct and reflect the quasi-long-range order that characterizes these phases. These findings suggest a clear experimental procedure for their detection, and give an intuitive insight into their dynamics.
