Abstract

Abstract We theoretically study the phase sensitivities of two different phase-shift configurations in an SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent ⊗ squeezed vacuum states. According to quantum Cramér-Rao theorem, we analytically obtain the ultimate phase sensitivities for two types of phase shift accumulating in one- and two-arm. Compared with the case of one-arm phase shift, the model with phase shift encoding in both arms may provide a better sensitivity when the strength of squeezed vacuum state is large enough. Furthermore, we discuss the achievable sensitivities with the homodyne measurement by invoking of error-propagation formula. In addition, we study the effect of internal and outernal photon losses on the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interferometer and find that the unbalanced interferometer is helpful to improve precision even with high external losses .

Phase estimation of phase shifts in two arms for an SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent and squeezed vacuum states

Qian-Kun Gong, Dong Li, Chun-Hua Yuan +2 more

We theoretically present the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds (QCRB) of an SU(1,1) interferometer for Gaussian states input with and without the internal photonic losses. The phase shifts in the single arm and in the double arms are studied and the corresponding analytical expressions of quantum Fisher information with Gaussian input states are presented. Different from the traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the QCRB of single arm case is slightly higher or lower than that of double arms case depending on the input states. With a fixed mean photon number and for pure Gaussian state input, the optimal sensitivity is achieved with a squeezed vacuum input in one mode and the vacuum input in the other. We compare the QCRB with the standard quantum limit and Heisenberg limit. In the case of small internal losses the QCRB can beat the standard quantum limit.

Improving the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with photon-added squeezed vacuum light

Lili Guo, Ya‐Fei Yu, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

We study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer from two aspects, i.e., the phase estimation determined by the error propagation formula and that by the quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB). The results show that the phase sensitivity by using the intensity detection reaches the sub-shot-noise limit with a coherent state and an m-photon-added squeezed vacuum state (m-PA-SVS) as inputs. The phase sensitivity gradually approaches the Heisenberg limit for increasing m, and the ultimate phase precision improves with the increase of m. In addition, the QCRB can be saturated by the intensity detection with inputting the m-PA-SVS.

Improved phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer based on the internal single-path local squeezing operation

Qingqian Kang, Zekun Zhao, Zhao, Teng +2 more

Compared to passive interferometers, SU(1,1) interferometers exhibit superior phase sensitivity due to the incorporation of nonlinear elements that enhance their ability to detect phase shifts. However, the precision of these interferometers is significantly affected by photon losses, especially internal losses, which can limit the overall measurement accuracy. Addressing these issues is essential to fully realize the advantages of SU(1,1) interferometers in practical applications. Among the known resources of quantum metrology, one of the most practical and efficient is squeezing. We propose a theoretical scheme to improve the precision of phase measurement using homodyne detection by implementing the single-path local squeezing operation (LSO) inside the SU(1,1) interferometer, with the coherent state and the vacuum state as the input states. We not only analyze the effects of the single-path LSO scheme on the phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information (QFI) under both ideal and photon-loss cases but also compare the effects of different squeezing parameters r on the system performance. Our findings reveal that the internal single-path LSO scheme can enhance the phase sensitivity and the QFI, effectively improving the robustness of the SU(1,1) interferometer against internal and external photon losses. Additionally, a larger squeezing parameter r leads to a better performance of the interferometer.

Enhancing phase sensitivity in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with various detection schemes using SU(1,1) coherent states

Improving interferometric phase sensitivity is crucial for high-precision measurements in rapidly developing quantum technologies. The Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is a versatile tool for analyzing this phenomenon. By splitting and recombining a light beam using beam splitters, the MZI allows for precise phase sensitivity analysis using tools like the quantum Cramér–Rao bound (QCRB) and the quantum Fisher information (QFI). This paper analyzes the phase sensitivity of an MZI in various scenarios using different detection schemes and input states. We compare the single- and two-parameter quantum estimation and their associated QCRB for three phase-shift situations: in both arms; only in the upper arm (asymmetric); and in both arms symmetrically. We then investigate the phase sensitivity under three detection schemes: intensity difference; single-mode intensity; and balanced homodyne. Additionally, we explore the use of Perelomov and Barut–Girardello coherent states, two types of SU(1,1) coherent states, in all scenarios. Notably, we demonstrate that, under optimal conditions, all detection schemes can achieve the QCRB by utilizing SU(1,1) coherent states as input states.

The Super Phase Sensitivity of an SU(1,1) Interferometer with a Two-Mode Squeezed Coherent State via Balanced Homodyne and Intensity Detection

Changlan Xu, Lei Wang, Shaoqiu Ke +2 more

We propose a novel scheme that is used for the enhancement of phase sensitivity. The SU(1,1) interferometer with a two-mode squeezed coherent state input, using balanced homodyne detection (BHD) and intensity detection (ID), is shown. Our results demonstrate that the phase sensitivity achieved via BHD outperforms that of ID. The optimal phase sensitivity via BHD surpasses the Heisenberg limit (HL) and approaches the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. A larger photon number and parameter strength can make the phase sensitivity better. Furthermore, we show the effects of internal and external losses on phase sensitivity in detail. When external loss reaches 10%, the phase sensitivity can reach the HL. Next, we have a detailed discussion on the impact of the squeezing parameter and photon number on phase sensitivity, which shows that our scheme has better phase sensitivity and enhanced robustness. This interferometer system thus holds significant potential for applications in quantum precision measurement.

Quantum optical metrology in the lossy SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers

We study the phase sensitivity in the conventional SU(2) and nonconventional SU(1,1) interferometers with a coherent and squeezed vacuum input state via quantum Cramer-Rao bound. We explicitly construct the detection scheme that gives the optimal phase sensitivity. For practical purposes, we show that in the presence of photon loss, both interferometers with proper homodyne detections are nearly optimal. We also find that unlike the coherent state and the squeezed vacuum state, the effects of imperfect detector on the phase sensitivity cannot be asymptotically removed for a generic coherent-squeezed state.
