Commutator of an arbitrary superoperator with the « asymptotic » evolution operator of a many-body system

Abstract

In the frame of the theory of subdynamics a general picture of the time evolution of a many-body system has been developed by the Brussels school of statistical mechanics. In this paper, we avoid the perturbation scheme so that we get compact notations and demonstrations. We derive here a general expression for the commutator of an arbitrary superoperator W with the " asymptotic " evolution superoperator Σ(t) = ΠU(t) where [formula] is the complete evolution superoperator and where Π is the usual superprojector of the theory of subdynamics. In the frame of relativistic non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the application of this commutator to all the generators of the Poincaré group is then given and we get back in particular the fundamental property of commutation with Π of the Lorentz-Liouville superoperator.

On time evolution for large quantum systems in superspace

Nobuhiko Mishima, Tomio Yamakoshi Petrosky

A reformulation in a superspace is given for Van Hove and Janner’s perturbation theory based on the two-resolvent method for nonequilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. This is attained by introducing an ordered superoperator in the superspace. As an application of our formalism, the derivation of an asymptotic generalized master equation in a Markovian form is given. Further, it is investigated how a quantum subdynamics theory similar to the Brussels school’s one can be formally constructed. Our subdynamics theory is formulated on every eigenspace of a superoperator (the ss-Hamiltonian) of which the eigenvalue is related to the intrinsic parameter E of Van Hove and Janner’s generalized master equation.

On a relation between exact and asymptotic time evolution operators

R. Balescu, Paul Clavin, Paul Mandel +1 more

A simple relation is shown to exist at all times between the exact evolution operator U(t) and the asymptotic evolution operator Σ(t) introduced by the Brussels school. Furthermore, it is shown that all invariants under U(t) are invariant under Σ(t) and that under certain conditions the converse is also true.

Superoperator representation of nonlinear response: Unifying quantum field and mode coupling theories

Shaul Mukamel

Computing response functions by following the time evolution of superoperators in Liouville space (whose vectors are ordinary Hilbert space operators) offers an attractive alternative to the diagrammatic perturbative expansion of many-body equilibrium and nonequilibrium Green's functions. The bookkeeping of time ordering is naturally maintained in real (physical) time, allowing the formulation of Wick's theorem for superoperators, giving a factorization of higher order response functions in terms of two fundamental Green's functions. Backward propagations and analytic continuations using artificial times (Keldysh loops and Matsubara contours) are avoided. A generating functional for nonlinear response functions unifies quantum field theory and the classical mode coupling formalism of nonlinear hydrodynamics and may be used for semiclassical expansions. Classical response functions are obtained without the explicit computation of stability matrices.

ON THE LARGE TIME BEHAVIOR OF QUANTUM SYSTEMS

I. Ya. Aref’eva, Igor Vasil'evich Volovich

There exists the well-known approximate expression describing the large time behavior of matrix elements of the evolution operator in quantum theory: < U(t)>≃ exp (at). This expression plays the crucial role in considerations of problems of quantum decoherence, radiation, decay, scattering theory, stochastic limit, derivation of master and kinetic equations etc. This expression was obtained in the Weisskopf–Wigner approximation and in the van Hove (stochastic) limit. We derive the exact general formula which includes the higher order corrections to the above approximate expression: <U(t)>= exp (At+B+C(t)). The constants A and B and the oscillating function C(t) are computed in perturbation theory. The method of perturbation of spectra and renormalized wave operators is used. The formula is valid for a general class of Hamiltonians used in statistical physics and quantum field theory.

One-boson Lee model and statistical-mechanical transformation theory

Russell Davidson, John Rae

The superoperator transformation theory developed by the Brussels school is applied to a simple quantum-mechanical system : the one-boson Lee model. The existence of a diagonalising transformation for this model permits the solution of dynamical problems such as that of induced emission and the construction of explicit matrix representations for asymptotic and dressing operators of the theory.

Zitterbewegung as a subdynamics

J Rae

The superoperator theory of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is applied to the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations. The transformation operators of this theory are found to be closely related to the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation while the associated subdynamics corresponds to the separation into smooth motion and zitterbewegung.
