QUPLAS: TOWARDS ANTIMATTER INTERFEROMETRY

S. Sala

Matter-wave interference has been observed for a wide range of objects: from electrons to neutrons and complex molecules. On the other hand, a double-slit-like experiment has never been carried out with positrons (the anti-particle of the electron) or with any other system containing antimatter. This thesis provides the theoretical foundations and experimental results of a Talbot-Lau interferometer specifically designed for this goal. Future applications include the measurement of the gravitational acceleration of positronium, to provide a test of the weak equivalence principle on a matter-antimatter symmetric, purely leptonic system.

Asymmetric Talbot-Lau interferometry for inertial sensing

S. Sala, Marco G. Giammarchi, Stefano Olivares

We study in detail a peculiar configuration of the Talbot-Lau matter wave interferometer, characterized by unequal distances between the two diffraction gratings and the observation plane. We refer to this apparatus as the ``asymmetric Talbot-Lau setup.'' Particular attention is given to its capabilities as an inertial sensor for particle and atomic beams, also in comparison with the classical moir\'e deflectometer. The present paper is motivated by possible experimental applications in the context of antimatter wave interferometry, including the measurement of the gravitational acceleration of antimatter particles. Therefore we focus our analysis on the current state of the art. To support our findings, we have also performed numerical simulations of realistic particle beams with varying speed distributions.

Loss and revival of coherence in the interaction between a positron beam and a photon field

F. Castelli, S. Cialdi, G. Costantini +9 more

We study the interaction between a positron beam in the single-particle regime in an interferometric configuration and a microwave electromagnetic field. We discuss the conditions under which quantum interference can be affected by the field and we outline its possible experimental study in the framework of QUantum interferometry and gravitation with Positrons and LASers (QUPLAS) experiment.
