Abstract

Wireless communication and sensing are moving from microwave, millimeter-wave into the terahertz (THz) frequency regime to meet the fast growing demand of ultrahigh data-rate communications and super resolution imaging. Faced with severe atmospheric absorption attenuation and the lack of power efficient transmitting source at the higher band, ultrasensitive and cost-effective receiver frontend technology is required for advanced THz wireless systems. To date, the most sensitive heterodyne mixers, the key components of frontend receiver systems, are based on low-temperature superconducting materials that operate at liquid helium (4.2 K) temperature range, requiring expensive and bulky cryogenic cooling systems thus hindering them from commercial applications such as wireless communications and sensing. In this article, we present a 340 GHz double-sideband fundamental mixer based on thin-film antenna-coupled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson junction that operates at a much higher temperature range attainable with smaller and cheaper cryocoolers. Based on our innovative work in terms of advanced device circuit and on-chip antenna designs, accurate parametric simulation analyses, and Josephson junction parameter optimizations, the reported mixer exhibits a measured noise temperature of 470 and 780 K at operating temperatures of 20 and 40 K respectively at 340 GHz, a performance significantly higher than any HTS THz mixers reported to date.

Modeling and analysis of a high-Tc superconducting polarization-manipulating single-sideband mixer for terahertz communications

Xiang Gao, Huanxin Li, Jinpeng Song +3 more

This paper presents systematic modeling and performance analyses of a 340-GHz dual-polarized antenna-coupled single-sideband (SSB) high-Tc superconducting (HTS) mixer for terahertz (THz) communication systems. The mixer features a fully monolithic-integrated circuit layout, which enables both sensitive heterodyne detection and high image rejection by appropriate polarization-manipulating operation. To predict the comprehensive performance of such a HTS mixer with relatively complicated network architecture and polarization relationships, an innovative modified three-port modeling approach is presented and developed by theoretical derivations. Using the measured Josephson junction parameters of our previous experimentally demonstrated HTS mixer module at the same band, the best conversion gain and SSB noise temperature of the presented mixer are predicted to be around −5 dB and 1200 K at the operating temperature of 40 K, respectively. In addition, the mixer exhibits a flat frequency response over a wide intermediate-frequency range from 15 to 25 GHz and high image rejection of more than 17 dB over the radio frequency operation range. The SSB HTS Josephson mixer will be useful for THz wireless communication applications.

A wideband terahertz high- T c superconducting Josephson-junction mixer: electromagnetic design, analysis and characterization

Xiang Gao, Ting Zhang, Jia Du +3 more

Abstract This paper presents a wideband terahertz (THz) mixer based on a thin-film antenna-coupled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−x (YBCO) step-edge Josephson junction. The HTS mixer enables the flexible harmonic mixing operation at multiple THz bands with the same microwave local oscillator (LO) source, and features very wide intermediate-frequency or instantaneous bandwidth. In order to optimize the frequency down-conversion performance of the mixer, systematic electromagnetic design and analysis have been carried out to improve the power coupling of THz radiation as well as wideband transmission of microwave signals. Experimental characterization of a fabricated device prototype has demonstrated that the mixer exhibits good performance at both the 200 GHz and 600 GHz bands. Detailed measurement results including the DC characteristics, LO pumping requirement, frequency response, mixing linearity and conversion gain are presented in this paper.

Design and modeling of a single-balanced high-Tc superconducting Josephson-junction terahertz mixer

Xiang Gao, Huanxin Li, Jia Du +5 more

High-Tc superconducting (HTS) receivers are promising candidates for terahertz (THz) communication applications due to their superior sensitivity and the cooling attainability with a miniature cryogenic system. Nevertheless, currently reported HTS mixers are mostly single-junction devices, and a more complicated architecture like the balanced configuration has not been investigated. This paper presents the design of a 600-GHz single-balanced HTS mixer, where detailed electromagnetic simulations are carried out to optimize the coupling efficiency and port isolation, as well as desired amplitude and phase relationship. To predict the noise and conversion performance, we present an innovative multiport network interleaving-based modeling method that enables powerful simulation verifications for single-balanced HTS Josephson mixers. Simulation results show that the presented device exhibits very good HTS mixer performance at the 600-GHz band, which validates the effectiveness of the design and the potential of the mixer for THz communication applications.

Terahertz harmonic mixer based on HTS Josephson junction

Mei Yu, Weiwei Xu, Jin Shi +3 more

High temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson junction (JJ) mixers are attractive candidates in receivers for terahertz (THz) communication due to their high sensitivity, wide bandwidth, low local oscillator (LO) power requirement and high harmonic numbers. The required LO frequencies and the cost can be greatly reduced when harmonic signals can be detected at high orders (more than 100). In this paper, up to 114thharmonic mixings is presented in a HTS bicrystal YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) JJ harmonic mixer coupled with a bowtie loaded meander antenna at 0.21 THz. HTS JJs will be promising high-order harmonic mixers for THz practical applications on reception or detection at THz bands.
