Abstract

Abstract The effect of an incoherent photon echo is studied experimentally and theoretically in 7 LiYF Er 3+ crystal ( transition). This is considered as a promising material for Raman optical quantum memory due to the extremely narrow optical transitions. Oscillations of the photon echo intensity versus the external static magnetic field are observed. The theory shows that the oscillation period is very sensitive to one of the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian in the excited state, thereby making the incoherent photon echo convenient for spectroscopic measurements.

Photon echo of an ultranarrow optical transition of 167Er3+ in 7LiYF4 crystals

Mansur M. Minnegaliev, E. I. Baibekov, K. I. Gerasimov +3 more

The longitudinal and transverse relaxation times for a transition between hyperfine sublevels of the lower electronic states of the 4 I 15/2 and 4 I 9/2 multiplets of 167 Er 3+ ions in 7 LiYF 4 crystals have been determined for the first time using two-pulse and stimulated photon echo measurements in zero magnetic field at a temperature of 4 K. The decay of the photon echo signal has been shown to be modulated, which is tentatively attributed to the superhyperfine interaction of the 167 Er 3+ ions with their 19 F − nearest neighbours. The contributions of various types of interaction to the ultranarrow linewidth (~24 MHz) of the transition in question are discussed. Our results demonstrate that this optical transition of the 167 Er 3+ ion in 7 LiYF 4 crystals is potentially attractive for use in Raman quantum memory schemes.

Effect of the Excitation Radiation Coherence on Oscillations of the Photon Echo Intensity

V. N. Lisin, Шегеда Анатолий Михайлович, В. В. Самарцев +1 more

The physical reasons for observing the splitting of optical lines several orders of magnitude smaller than the spectral width of a laser pulse are investigated. A theory of coherent and incoherent photon echo (PE) in an external static magnetic field and in the presence of a pulsed magnetic field, which causes oscillations of the PE intensity, is elaborated. It is shown that the periods of oscillations in the echo intensity, the echo duration, and the dimensions of the regions in the inhomogeneous line, where the excited ions are coherent, do not depend on the degree of coherence of the laser pulse and on the external static magnetic field. As follows from the theory, in the case of the coherent excitation of the echo, the amplitude of the intensity oscillations is independent of the external static magnetic field if the inhomogeneous line is symmetric. It is shown that the amplitude of the oscillations at the incoherent excitation of the echo is equal to the autocorrelation function of the distribution function of the transition frequency along the inhomogeneous line with the argument equal to the Zeeman splitting of the optical line in the external magnetic field. In this case, the experimental values of the oscillation amplitude are in good agreement with the calculated values of the autocorrelation function for the total inhomogeneous line in LuLiF 4 :Er 3+ ( 4 I 15/2 ⇒F 9/2 transition). In the same way, the autocorrelation function has been obtained for YLiF 4 :Er 3+ on the same transition.

Optical coherence of166Er:7LiYF4crystal below 1 K

N Kukharchyk, D Sholokhov, Oleg A. Morozov +3 more

We explore optical coherence and spin dynamics of an isotopically purified 166 Er: 7 LiYF 4 crystal below 1 K and at weak magnetic fields < 0.3T. Crystals were grown in our lab and demonstrate narrow inhomogeneous optical broadening down to 16 MHz. Solid-state atomic ensembles with such narrow linewidths are very attractive for implementing of off-resonant Raman quantum memory and for the interfacing of superconducting quantum circuits and telecom C-band optical photons. Both applications require a low magnetic field of ∼10 mT. However, at conventional experimental temperatures T > 1.5 K, optical coherence of Er:LYF crystal attains time scale only at strong magnetic fields above 1.5 T. In the present work, we demonstrate that the deep freezing of Er:LYF crystal below 1 K results in the increase of optical coherence time to at weak fields.

Observation and investigation of narrow optical transitions of 167 Er 3+ ions in femtosecond laser printed waveguides in 7 LiYF 4 crystal

Mansur M. Minnegaliev, I. V. Dyakonov, K. I. Gerasimov +5 more

Abstract We produced optical waveguides in the 167 Er 3 + : 7 LiYF 4 crystal with diameters ranging from 30 to 100 μ m by using the depressed-cladding approach with femtosecond laser. Stationary and coherent spectroscopy was performed on the 809 nm optical transitions between the hyperfine sublevels of 4 I 15/2 and 4 I 9/2 multiplets of 167 Er 3+ ions both inside and outside of waveguides. It was found that the spectra of 167 Er 3+ were slightly broadened and shifted inside the waveguides compared to the bulk crystal spectra. We managed to observe a two-pulse photon echo on this transition and determined phase relaxation times for each waveguide. The experimental results show that the created crystal waveguides doped by rare-earth ions can be used in optical quantum memory and integrated quantum schemes.

Low magnetic fields behavior of photon echo in LuLiF4:Er3+

V. N. Lisin, В. В. Самарцев, Шегеда Анатолий Михайлович +2 more

It is reported about the first observation and studying of the photon echo in LuLiF4:Er3+. The energy transition is 4I15/2→4F9/2 (λ=6536 Å). The density of ErF3 is 0.025 wt%. The operation temperature is 1.9 K. Measurements were spent at low (up to 1200 Oe) and even zero external magnetic fields. It was studied a behavior of the photon echo intensity versus the magnetic field magnitude and direction about the crystal axis C and versus the laser pulse separation t 12. It was observed an exponential growth and then, after some plateau, an exponential decreasing of the photon echo intensity as a function of magnetic field with increasing of the magnetic field from zero value. The parameters describing the exponential growth and decreasing are not depended on direction of magnetic field. Value of a magnetic field at which the echo intensity accepts the maximum, and quantity of this maximum decrease with increased the pulse separation t 12 and the angle θ between the magnetic field and crystal axis. The echo intensity exponentially decreases with increased θ. The parameter describing the exponential decreasing is not depended on the magnitude of the field. The echo intensity as a function of pulse separation shows exponential decay. The phase relaxation time is depended on the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field. T 2 is equal to 202±16 ns at zero magnetic field. Phenomenological formula is suggested, which qualitatively presents the mentioned dependencies. Polarization properties of the backward photon echo in this crystal are studied also.

Spin echoes in the ground and an optically excited state of $^{167}$Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ at near-zero magnetic fields using Raman heterodyne spectroscopy

Erbium-167-doped yttrium orthosilicate is an ideal candidate for a microwave-addressed quantum memory due to its telecom wavelength optical transition and hyperfine structure with and without an applied magnetic field. However, to date there has been little investigation in coherence times for transitions around zero magnetic field, or for hyperfine structure other than from the ground state. Through the use of Raman heterodyne spectroscopy, we have identified transitions at zero magnetic field with a small dependence on field that are suitable for detecting spin echoes for both the ground and excited state. We measured coherence times of transitions at 879.4 MHz and 896.7 MHz as 370 $\mu$s and 1.4 ms respectively at 3.2 K. This is a 100-fold increase in coherence time compared to previous measurements at the same dopant concentration and 200 times greater than the even isotopes of erbium-doped yttrium orthosilicate previously used to demonstrate a microwave memory.
