Phase transitions of a cluster Ising model

Abstract

We study a cluster Ising model with multispin interactions which can be exactly solved in the framework of free fermions. The model can realize topological phases with any integer winding numbers; we study the critical and multicritical behaviors of the phase transitions between these topological phases. For the ordinary critical point, we find that the critical exponent that governs the divergence of the correlation length is ν=1, and the critical exponent that describes the scaling behaviors of the order parameter is β=ΔN_{w}/8, with ΔN_{w} the difference of the winding numbers of the two phases at the two sides of the critical point. However, these results are not applicable for some multicritical points which have much more complicated behaviors, such as path dependent scaling behaviors and quasicritical behaviors and so forth.

Multicritical behavior in topological phase transitions

S. Rufo, Nei Lopes, M. A. Contínentino +1 more

Topological phase transitions can be described by the theory of critical phenomena and identified by critical exponents that define their universality classes. This is a consequence of the existence of a diverging length at the transition that has been identified as the penetration depth of the surface modes in the nontrivial topological phase. In this paper we characterize different universality classes of topological transitions by determining their correlation length exponents directly from numerical calculations of the penetration length of the edge modes as a function of the distance to the topological transition. We consider generalizations of the topological nontrivial Su-Schriefer-Heeger (SSH) model, for the case of next next nearest neighbors hopping terms and in the presence of a synthetic potential. The latter allows the system to transit between two universality classes with different correlation length and dynamic critical exponents. It presents a line of multicritical point in its phase diagram since the behavior of the Berry connection depends on the path it is approached. We compare our results with those obtained from a scaling approach to the Berry connection.

Scaling of geometric phase close to multicritical points in cluster-Ising models

Wei Nie, Feng Mei, Luigi Amico A +1 more

We study the phase diagram of a class of models in which a generalized cluster interaction can be quenched by Ising exchange interaction and external magnetic field. We characterize the various phases through winding numbers. They may be ordinary phases with local order parameter or exotic ones, known as symmetry protected topologically ordered phases. Quantum phase transitions with dynamical critical exponents z = 1 or z = 2 are found. Quantum phase transitions are analyzed through finite-size scaling of the geometric phase accumulated when the spins of the lattice perform an adiabatic precession. In particular, we quantify the scaling behavior of the geometric phase in relation with the topology and low energy properties of the band structure of the system.

Signatures of topological phase transition on a quantum critical line

Ranjith Kumar R, Nilanjan Roy, Y R Kartik +2 more

Recently topological states of matter have witnessed a new physical phenomenon where both edge modes and gapless bulk coexist at topological quantum criticality. The presence and absence of edge modes on a critical line can lead to an unusual class of topological phase transition between the topological and nontopological critical phases. We explore the existence of this new class of topological phase transitions in a generic model representing the topological insulators and superconductors and we show that such transition occurs at a multicritical point, i.e., at the intersection of two critical lines. To characterize these transitions we reconstruct the theoretical frameworks, which include bound state solution of the Dirac equation, winding number, correlation factors, and scaling theory of the curvature function to work for the criticality. Critical exponents and scaling laws are discussed to distinguish between the multicritical points, which separate the critical phases. Entanglement entropy and its scaling in the real space provide further insights into the unique transition at criticality revealing the interplay between fixed point and critical point at the multicriticalities.

Random free-fermion quantum spin chain with multispin interactions

Francisco Castilho Alcaraz, José A. Hoyos, Rodrigo A. Pimenta

We study the effects of quenched disorder in a class of quantum chains with ($p+1$)-multispin interactions exhibiting a free fermionic spectrum, paying special attention to the case $p=2$. Depending if disorder couples to (i) all the couplings or just to (ii) some of them, we have two distinct physical scenarios. In case (i), we find that the transitions of the model are governed by a universal infinite-randomness critical point surrounded by quantum Griffiths phases similarly as happens to the random transverse-field Ising chain. In case (ii), we find that quenched disorder becomes an irrelevant perturbation: the clean critical behavior is stable and Griffiths phases are absent. Beyond the perturbative regime, disorder stabilizes a line of finite-randomness critical points (with nonuniversal critical exponents), that ends in a multicritical point of infinite-randomness type. In that case, quantum Griffiths phases also appear surrounding the finite-disorder transition point. We have characterized the correlation functions and the low-temperature thermodynamics of these chains. Our results are derived from a strong-disorder renormalization-group technique and from finite-size scaling analysis of the spectral gap computed exactly (up to sizes $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{7}$) via an efficient new numerical method recently introduced in the literature [Phys. Rev. B 104, 174206 (2021)].

Topological transition between gapless phases in quantum walks

Ranjith Kumar R, Hideaki Obuse

Topological gapless phases of matter have been a recent interest among theoretical and experimental condensed matter physicists. Fermionic chains with extended nearest neighbor couplings have been observed to show unique topological transition at the multicritical points between distinct gapless phases. In this work, we show that such topological gapless phases and the transition between them can be simulated in a quantum walk. We consider a three-step discrete-time quantum walk and identify various critical or gapless phases and multicriticalities from the topological phase diagram along with their distinguished energy dispersions. We reconstruct the scaling theory based on the curvature function to study transition between gapless phases in the quantum walk. We show the interesting features observed in fermionic chains, such as diverging, sign flipping and swapping properties of curvature function, can be simulated in the quantum walk. Moreover, the renormalization group flow and Wannier state correlation functions also identify transition at the multicritical points between gapless phases. We observe the scaling law and overlapping of critical and fixed point properties at the multicritical points of the fermionic chains can also be observed in the quantum walk. Furthermore, we categorize the topological transitions at various multicritical points using the group velocity of the energy eigenstates. Finally, the topological characters of various gapless phases are captured using winding number which allows one to distinguish various gapless phases and also show the transitions at the multicritical points.
