Multistability and high reflectance of a mono-layer of three-level quantum emitters with a doublet in the excited state

Abstract

We study theoretically the nonlinear optical response of a mono-layer of three-level quantum emitters with a doublet in the excited state. It is shown that the layer’s response exhibits multistability. In a certain frequency range, the monolayer operates as a perfect bistable mirror.

Abstract We study theoretically the nonlinear optical response of a monolayer of regularly arranged three-level identical quantum emitters with a doublet in the excited state to the action of a monochromatic electromagnetic field quasi-resonant to optical transitions in the emitter. The total retarded dipole–dipole interaction of the emitters is accounted for in the mean-field approximation. This interaction plays the role of a positive feedback, which (in combination with the immanent nonlinearity of emitters themselves) leads to multistability of the monolayer response. The stability of different response branches is analyzed using the Lyapunov exponents method. It is found that the instability type depends on the doublet splitting and changes from self-oscillations to chaos upon increasing the splitting. Another important property of the monolayer is its high (almost 100%) reflectance in a certain frequency range; i.e., within this range, the monolayer operates as a perfect nanometer mirror; moreover, reflection can be switched to transmission changing slightly the incident field amplitude (bistability). The possibility of application of the above mentioned monolayer optical properties in nanophotonics is discussed.

Quantum metasurfaces with periodic arrays of ΛΛΛ-emitters

We study theoretically the optical response of a monolayer comprizing regularly spaced quantum emitters with a doublet in the ground state (the so-called $Λ$-emitters). The emitters' self-action through the retarded dipole-dipole interaction provides a positive feedback, interplay of which with the intrinsic nonlinearity of an isolated emitter, leads to an exotic optical dynamics of the system and prominent effects, such as multistability, self-oscillations, and quasi-chaotic behavior. %The bifurcation diagram approach is used to classify different scenarios of the system's behavior. In a certain spectral domain, the monolayer operates as a bistable mirror. The optical response of the monolayer manifests high sensitivity to the doublet splitting and relaxation within the doublet, suggesting the latter to be the key parameters to tailor the monolayer optical response. These properties make such a system very promising for nanophotonic applications. We discuss the relevance of the predicted nonlinear effects for nano-sized all-optical devices.

Quantum metasurfaces of arrays of Λ-emitters for photonic nano-devices

Abstract We address exotic optical response of a planar metasurface comprising a monolayer of regularly spaced quantum three-level emitters with a doublet in the ground state (the so-called Λ-emitters). All emitters are coupled by the retarded dipole field which depends on the current state of all emitters. This coupling introduces a feedback into the system. Complex interplay of the latter with the intrinsic nonlinearity of a three-level system results in several remarkable effects in the monolayer’s optical response, such as multistability, self-oscillations, and chaos. The peculiarity of the considered system is that some of the predicted nonlinear effects manifest themselves at very low excitation field intensities (on the order of 1 W/cm 2 ), which is advantageous for possible applications: the monolayer can operate as a perfect reflector, a bistable mirror, and a THz or noise generator. It is argued therefore that the proposed system is a promising candidate for a building block for various photonic nano-devices.

Optical Dynamics of a Supercrystal of V-Type Quantum Emitters: Effects of the Dephasing of Electronic States

Abstract The optical response of a two-dimensional supercrystal (monolayer) of quantum emitters with a doublet in the excited state to the action of a continuous external field was theoretically studied, considering the dephasing of the electronic states of the system. The secondary field acting on the V-emitter from other V-emitters of the system forms their nonlinearity and provides internal positive feedback, which leads to bistability and periodic and aperiodic self-oscillations, including chaotic behavior. In the presence of dephasing, the multistability of the optical response is preserved. Phase relaxation leads to a change in the scenario of the system dynamics from chaos to periodic oscillations of the field amplitude, i.e., to a chaos–limit cycle bifurcation and to a decrease in the reflectivity of the monolayer in linear and nonlinear modes.
